you can make them legal correct?

No sadly you cannot, and even if you got it registered in a state, it's still federally illegal.
Well ****. I guess that leaves me with the silvia

lol sorry, after 25 years they could possibly become legal, but we'll have to see then.
Why are they illegal? I heard it was the CARB rating.

They were very unsafe and they weren't even close to passing the US safety standards. A company called motorex had a deal with the government that allowed them to import them, and then make them safe enough for the US and then sell them to the general public, but it was later found out that they really weren't changing anything, so the company was shut down and it made the situation with r34s worse in the eyes of the government. Basically don't own one unless your ready to see it get crushed.

If they were registered previously then you can still own them. If a cop pulls you over in one and it is fully legally registered then they don't impound it and crush it. You can technically still buy one but good luck finding someone to sell you theres. There's on R34 for sale locally by me with legal registration and everything but it's an auto and non-turbo'd. There were a few at a recent local car meet also.

You can bring them in from out of the country for I believe 2 weeks, I know a few guys who bring them in from Canada for Car shows and things like that. You can buy them sure, but it doesn't change the fact that they are federally illegal. Like I said you can register it in a state but it's still federally illegal.

could I import one and hide it in my garage until its 25 years old?

You would have to get it off the dock first. If what I've read in the pass is right (I read up on importing these badboys awhile back and again when 25 year hit for the r32), your gonna need to pass a lot things to make it legal. Here's the article on it [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] A google search and thorough research will tell you a lot about this.

Truth be told, it's better to go with a 240sx (usdm silvia) and do a sr20 swap if you want a silvia like car. Silvia s15's are illegal in US (I am pretty sure). Though the sr20 swap is illegal in the us (due to the motor never being sold/used in any cars produced in the us), in states that don't have smog I've heard you can be fine with one of them and get away with it. You could also do a RB swap too. Either way, with me living in California, I just find it's to much money and too much of a pain (Dang Smog! lol). Maybe if I am rich one day I can do a RB swap in a 240z *drools*

Can I ask what's you budget?

This is something I am planing to do down the road (no pun intended) but I would say 12-15k total.

Yea, this definitely wouldn't get you an r34 (Unless you were in japan. Man I love Japan so much. Why can't the US have a similar car scene to Japan lol.) here in california. The last one I saw listed for sale was on Craigslist and the dude wanted about 30k+ for it. Another question is where are you located?

I'd stick with the s13 because r34s are illegal because they don't pass safety and emission standards. There are very few in the U.S. that are for show or are highly modified to meet the standards which would defeat the purpose of having one anyway. Now if you'd like to import an r32 those just became legal in the states recently. I've seen them going for $8k-$15k

Your chances of getting one there are pretty slim. Again I'd stick with an s13 or even an s14 if you can get your hands on one and as mentioned before doing a rb26dett swap. I'm an automotive technician(aka mechanic) and have seen a good number of these and I can say that they are definitely desirable maybe not as much as an r34 but, people definitely appreciate them in the tuner world.

Nope, s14 in reality is nothing more than a chassis code. So, no "s14's" aren't illegal because it is only one part which, just so happens to be the platform of both the Silvia and 240sx. I don't know how much you actually know about cars, but at least 8/10 when you hear someone in the states talking about an s14 they're referring to a 240sx. If you looked at a Silvia and a 240sx chassis then "s14" will most certainly be present on both of them. Yes, this thread is obviously about Japanese imports and that is also why I threw the line in about the r32 since the r34 is illegal. The 240sx is a cheap and simple option since it's here in states already so you obviously don't have to it import and they are easy to find in most places. I wouldn't even bother importing any other "JDM" cars they end up as nothing more than big money pits.

R34's are illegal in the us unless you swap the engine
