No sadly you cannot, and even if you got it registered in a state, it's still federally illegal.
Well ****. I guess that leaves me with the silvia

lol sorry, after 25 years they could possibly become legal, but we'll have to see then.
Why are they illegal? I heard it was the CARB rating.

They were very unsafe and they weren't even close to passing the US safety standards. A company called motorex had a deal with the government that allowed them to import them, and then make them safe enough for the US and then sell them to the general public, but it was later found out that they really weren't changing anything, so the company was shut down and it made the situation with r34s worse in the eyes of the government. Basically don't own one unless your ready to see it get crushed.

If they were registered previously then you can still own them. If a cop pulls you over in one and it is fully legally registered then they don't impound it and crush it. You can technically still buy one but good luck finding someone to sell you theres. There's on R34 for sale locally by me with legal registration and everything but it's an auto and non-turbo'd. There were a few at a recent local car meet also.

If you really want, I'd get a Silvia and do an RB25DET swap into it. Doing a swap into a Silvia (which I am pretty sure are legal in the US and are much more easily attainable) is easier IMO. The R33-34s are hard to get legally if not impossible. I do see them from time to time at car shows which I don't really get, but hey, people find a way. There's a few Skyline R34 sedans in my area which are just awesome but they're automatic with naturally aspirated RB25's.

Well your talking a ton of money with both of those cars being illegal in the states. if you are going about importing one that will be like 10k to freight it over here and then you got a car you already spent over 20k on and it gets to sit for track use only basically or used on a closed course. It is probably the biggest hassle you will ever have in your life trying to get one of these cars imported. the ones ive found for sale in the us already are un in the 40k range lol

I find it stupid the way R34's are illegal in the US. You guys are so unlucky, R34's are just, one of the best cars ever made, love 'em. (Pretty sure they're legal here in the UK right?)

But if you can somehow get an R34 then go for it, but as already said, it's hard to do it in the US. If not, the Silvia is still a great car. Lovely car to mod too.

Seen a Silvia on the road for the first time today actually

R33 is where it's at anyway... Having a chance to drive my mates dad's was epic, plus it looks nicer imo.

But yeah, unlucky chucky. May want to find a new car to spend some dolla on.

You can bring them in from out of the country for I believe 2 weeks, I know a few guys who bring them in from Canada for Car shows and things like that. You can buy them sure, but it doesn't change the fact that they are federally illegal. Like I said you can register it in a state but it's still federally illegal.

You would have to get it off the dock first. If what I've read in the pass is right (I read up on importing these badboys awhile back and again when 25 year hit for the r32), your gonna need to pass a lot things to make it legal. Here's the article on it [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] A google search and thorough research will tell you a lot about this.

Truth be told, it's better to go with a 240sx (usdm silvia) and do a sr20 swap if you want a silvia like car. Silvia s15's are illegal in US (I am pretty sure). Though the sr20 swap is illegal in the us (due to the motor never being sold/used in any cars produced in the us), in states that don't have smog I've heard you can be fine with one of them and get away with it. You could also do a RB swap too. Either way, with me living in California, I just find it's to much money and too much of a pain (Dang Smog! lol). Maybe if I am rich one day I can do a RB swap in a 240z *drools*

Can I ask what's you budget?

I live in California aswell. My Friend owns a 240sx (S14) and currently has a fully built SR20 in it, he uses it for drifting mostly of course. He had no issues with the motor swap, as long as he passes smog he's fine.

Yep! How does he pass his smog though? I've heard some people swap in the original engine, go for smog then swap it back out.
