South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been given five years in jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge.

The parents of Reeva Steenkamp told the BBC they were happy with the sentence and relieved the case was over. The defence said it expected Pistorius to serve about 10 months in prison.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder.

Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term, and the defence had argued for community service and house arrest.

You don't think he deserved to be put in jail for killing someone really?

I'm hoping he actually meant "he deserves more than five years" rather than him not deserving a sentence.

I hold the view that five years isn't enough (especially when only 10 months of it will be spent in prison, the rest spent on house arrest) but the argument is rather futile because regardless of the length of the sentence, nobody can compensate for the damage he's caused.

You can't just look at it like that. I know someone that is from South Africa and they say that home invasions are common, except the criminals involved put no regard for human life and will kill the innocent civilians even if they get what they want. He didn't have his prosthetic legs on so if it was an intruder then he would not stand a chance.

There are obvious distinctions between homicide, culpable homicide, manslaughter and murder.
If there wasn't then the terms wouldn't even exist.

It's not as simple and black and white as, 'You killed someone therefore life in prison.'

But he killed her, hence why he deserves more than five years. The justice system is abused and therefore is pointless even trying to make a statement and directing it towards me when it doesn't even work like that.,
