I got the Epiphone SG the cherry looking one with the black pickguard. had it for 5 years and still sounds great! xD

as for learning how to play..

learn how to read tabs(ultimate-guitar)
(G) (C) (D)
E-3------X------2--|
B-3------1------3--|
G-0------0------2--|
D-0------2------0--|
A-2------3------X--|
E-3------X------X--|
Very simple. each line represents each string

learn how to read music(very important)
-if your looking to write your own music you need to know how music works and how to write/read it.

good picking technique
-starting out you can down-pick until you start to get it, but you want to start alternate picking asap..up and down picking.
-also you should only use your arm when strumming chords as for single notes you should only move your wrist..its a really bad habit to kick if your use your arm for everything..trust me lol I still have yet to understand how to read music and Ive been playing for 7 years (on and off) but mainly use tabs.

dont depend on tabs they can always be wrong.. if you try and play it by ear youll start remembering what each note sounds like and you can learn songs easier(i almost have this down)

learning guitar is NOT easy..it takes time, patience and practice..Im no expert, but from someone who couldnt even play a single song to now being able to play whatever I want with a little practice..thought id give share my findings with you

Grenader-Zim wrote Id agree that the acoustic would be easier to compose. Its funny actually. Metallica - Enter Sandman was the first more heavier metal sounding song I listened to when I was a kid, but the love for metal fell out for me for a while. But never completely and now im inspired. lol

I remember trying to compose metal at one point, i just didn't have the ability to make It, especially guitar solos. I'm more of a finesse player than a shred your face off player haha

I have a similar style of playing. I love little catchy riffs which is probably why I like RHCP so much. Songs like Otherside, This Velvet Glove, Scar Tissue, ect. are some of my favorite songs to play. And it's perfect for me since I did just start playing.

Grenader-Zim wrote Thanks, you know I used to prefer the sound of an acoustic more simply because of the more mellow tones, but I find myself listening to more heavy metal and its been inspiring me to play. And actually one of the first songs Id like to learn is "All Around the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix"

That's a great song you can never go wrong with Hendrix. But like all Hendrix songs its pretty tricky to play, you will have to be playing for a while before you can play it well.

I never woulda imagined wanting to play Hendrix right out of the gate. When i first started playing even barchords were hard for me, but now they're a cakewalk. Guitar takes a while to learn timing and the feel of it. Even harder to find your own sound

Yea I remember when I first started playing in December I told my dad I wanted to learn to play Hey Joe he told me that wasnt going to happen, so I didnt even try, the first song I ever tried to play was Under The Bridge... that was a disaster. I still cant even play that song I can only get the intro and the first set of chords. I was actually able to play barre chords about 3 months of playing, only took about a week of practicing them.

I still struggle with timing and as for finding my own sound... please I haven't even been playing for a year yet.

Well, welcome to the world of actual musicians!

Now, like the others have said, practice your chords and learn to read music. I also recommend getting lessons. I've been playing for several years, but playing with my teacher is always so much fun. Even after years of playing, my teacher always gives me incite to be a better player. Im not a soloist, more of a rhythm guitarist, so these tips may not apply to you, but they may help.

- When your first starting, stay within your own element. Dont play things that are in tunings you arent comfortable with yet as a starting player.

- Websites are great for tabulatures, but there is a chance some of them are wrong. So, just have confidence in yourself, and try to learn some parts to songs by ear.

-Learn to alternate pick effectively. It may be a struggle in the beginning, but it will pay off in the end, and the sooner you learn, the more effective you will be later.

-The most important thing I can offer you is to have fun. Your practicing and learning a fine art. You will have problems in the beginning, but you will work your way up to a shredder.
