Is healthy food expensive, or is bad food cheap?

The price difference is simple. When you buy a burger from a fast food place, look at how much hamburger is really on there- it's not a lot. Also look at the quality of it. Burger king isn't giving you top sirloin burger when you buy their burgers, it's super low quality meat (which is why sometimes you'll find chunks of bone) that has a bunch of added not natural fillers in it. You've heard of pink slime, right? This is what most schools, jails, and fast food places use. I think Mcdonalds has since stopped using pink slime and actually uses good meat (not to say it's cooked healthy).

The other thing is quantity. When you buy a whole bunch of something, the price per item goes down. For example, buy a jar of ketchup at a general grocery store. Now buy the case of it at Costco, Winco, etc. and look at the price per jar in that case. Maybe it's a $0.15 savings, but now if you can save that on the bread, meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese now you're talking about saving $1.05.

Here's an example, a pack of 24 hamburger buns at Costco is $2.99 or $0.12 each. An 8 pack at my local IGA was around $3.50 or $0.44 each (not sure of the exact amount but it was around there). If I wanted 24 buns, that would've costed me $10.50, so by buying in bulk at Costco, you save $0.32 on each bun, or $7.51 after 24 buns. Places like Mcdonalds get to capitalize on this because they sell thousands of burgers each day so they can buy in bulk which ultimately saves you money as they always compete with the rest of the fast food chains.

Procesed foods like Burgers are no good for you. With the fat which brings out the flavour. Foods like Burgers people won't buy. Expensive foods are better for your body.

Rubbish Foods like McDonalds - Fatty foods you like
Healthy foods like Nuts, Oils etc... people tend to waste it or chuck it in the bin.

I think it is about mass production and ease of access. Big companies can get their product out to any store and mass produce their foods and bring down the cost. On the other hand, healthier foods are typically from the local area or from a small business and for a niche market, which drives up the price.

I would be more inclined to eat a healthier diet if fresh foods were cheaper.

Of you think about it, it's cheaper. For example....

If I go to McDonald's and I want to get a big mac. It's about £6. Including the milkshake.

But I can go to tesco instead and buy about 3 packs of salads ( costs abiut £2 per pack ), it could in all fairness last one week.
