Rhetoric wrote This is obviously a tribute picture.
They're not saying they've gone through the same fight at all.
The people on Iwo Jima fought for freedom, the picture above is a tribute to them and their sacrifice now that some of that freedom has actually been gained.

But let's take your idea that they are actually trying to say they've been through the same fight.
26,000 Americans died on Iwo Jima. Every year in the US alone there are 30,000 suicides.
While exact statistics are impossible to gain, it is known that gay people attempt suicide 4 times more than heterosexual people.
The number of people who have committed suicide because they were being bullied for being gay is obviously far more than those who died fighting on Iwo Jima, and those are only the ones who killed themselves, never mind the ones killed by other people.

This comparison is not disgusting, it is poignant and it is honouring those who fought for freedom on Iwo Jima.

As for people saying that no gay person has ever died for gay marriage. Seriously?
Gay rights, including marriage, have been fought for by gays since the 60's and before.
Gay people have been murdered, beaten, pushed to suicide and killed in protests so that gay marriage could be legalized.
That's like saying no black person ever died in the fight for civil rights.

I guess gay marriage is more important than our country now.

One of the most childish and immature comments I've seen on this forum. You are a fool.

I may be the one with the un common view, but I see nothing wrong with it. I can go on all day about how the American flag means NOTHING compared to what it meant in those times and how big of a joke it is, but we will spare that for another time.

What does the original image symbolize? Freedom? What they did by recreating (or altering) the image is exercise their "freedom" of speech.

The first image shows a big accomplishment for America. The second image shows a big accomplishment for the gays. They don't really have a physical picture that shows success, so what's the next best thing? They have their flag, and an iconic image of American history. Now they recreate that image for another iconic image of American history.

I am not gay or bi, but that is my view. Now it is all fine and dandy for you to make your little image, what every you have to do to feel good. That is completely different than waving it in my face. Waving that image in everyone's face is whats wrong, not simply making that image to share your success on say your Facebook page, or a blog about gay rights, etc.

To some, I may have an extremist point of view, but tat is just how I see things.

This picture has been "reinterpreted" hundreds of times with different situations.
The "gay" community isn't the only community "disrespecting" it.

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is often cited as being the most reproduced photograph in history. It is also probably the most parodied image in the world. The Iwo Jima pose has become a popular symbol for organizations or movements wishing to convey victory, teamwork, or patriotism. The use of the image has ranged from respectful homage to what some consider offensive misappropriation.

and yet this is the only time you've decided to rant about it?
You must care so deeply about that picture. You let McDonalds get away with it, but them gays? Hell no.

It isn't disrespectful. The picture represents victory. That is it.
The only comparison going on when people spoof that picture is the one you are all making in your own heads.

Ask anyone who has spoofed that picture if they are comparing their victory to the one on Iwo Jima and I guarantee every single person would say, 'No, don't be silly.'
