Nervous about the rash of school shootings that have taken place over the past decade, an Oklahoma company has launched a new product that, with a lack of effective gun control laws, promises to protect schoolchildren will bulletproof blankets.

The Bodyguard Blanket, designed and manufactured by ProTecht, is advertised as a 5/16-inch thick bulletproof rectangle that students can wear over their back in the event of a tragedy at school. The product comes adorned with a backpack straps and is reportedly able to protect against nails and shards of metal as well as bullets.

Walker, a podiatrist, said the idea was born when he was trying to come up with an idea that would protect children without access to a tornado shelter from harsh weather and from the debris that it creates, particularly in Oklahoma.

He turned over an outline of the idea over to Steve Schone, an inventor, who thought of equipping the product with a high-density plastic used in ballistic armor, yet is lighter than the usual Kevlar technology.

It seems quite silly, but it could still be useful. It's not like they're gonna be used daily. Just stuffed somewhere in case of an emergency. So better than nothing I guess !

I think this is ridiculous, i looks like those blankets wont protect anything there sides are wide open.

Also, if people were really concerned about school shootings metal detectors and pat downs will do the job just fine.

But don't you think it would be better than nothing? If it can stop a bullet, it can save a life.

Are you going to pat down everyone who enters the building every day?

Yes, when i lived in a bad area for a couple years they made us go through metal detectors every day, bags searched and sometimes patted. It was a real pain and the area was bad so my family and I moved to a better area. If you don't think schools will do this they will, Trust me!

I like what they are trying to do here but lets be honest, if a person was to come into a school how long would it take them to deploy these blankets? I mean realistically even with practice, the shooter would already be through a classroom. It can save lives just like a bullet proof vest but people will still die. I think its good but I can't see these being widely used in classrooms for awhile, not to mention the price tag for one of these blankets must be crazy.

There are some schools in the US that do that. Every student and teacher walks through a metal detector and if it goes to an extent, pat down searches do happen.

To be honest, this looks like it would work but then again if it says it can withstand those bullets then it buys me
