There are 7 gravitation cores in total.
You will have to collect them sooner or later to progress in the story. As a nice side effect you will also unlock the 'Fragmented' Trophy / Achievement. The gravitation cores are also needed to earn 'Defragmented'.
Can't find a gravitation core? You might need to progress in the story until you get the gravitation core mission at the end of episode 4.

I didn't really find this too hard to achieve but you had to work on it over time and it was quite time consuming.
