Microsoft Will Make One Million Unused Xbox Gamertags Available Again

4.6
Many Xbox Live gamertags have been claimed during the early days of the first Xbox, and then never used again. Microsoft announced via Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb that that “nearly one million” of those nicknames will be made available again on May 18th.

"Starting on Wednesday, May 18th @2:00pm ET / 11:00AM PT, we will begin releasing nearly one million Gamertags to our valued Xbox Live Gold members with active subscriptions and at least 1 year of cumulative Xbox Live Gold tenure. These Gamertags will be released over a 24-hour period, to give our fans in various countries an equal chance to get one"

These Gamertags are from accounts abandoned from the original Xbox era, the same source of Gamertags we used in our 2011 release. These accounts never migrated to Xbox 360 and as a result they have been inactive for quite some time.

While it may be challenging to find the exact Gamertag you want, keep trying, as there are many great Gamertags that will be released. Although we can’t share the actual list, we can tell you that many of the available Gamertags are in the following categories:

Proper Names
Pop culture references (Entertainment, sports, gaming)
Types of Food
Geography and Travel
Science and Technology
Math and Numbers
Animals
Some of the greatest inventions of all time
Access to these newly-released Gamertags will be available on Xbox.com, which is the most convenient way to make a Gamertag change. Xbox Live Gold members can also access these Gamertags within the Xbox App on Windows 10 and on the Xbox One console. Xbox 360 owners will need to use Xbox.com, the Xbox App on Windows 10, or an Xbox One console to participate given that access to these newly-released Gamertags is not available from an Xbox 360 console. Are they free name changes or no? I don't play enough anymore to pay for name changes.

Inton Going to be interesting to see the tags people pick up. Doubt I will change, might create an account and see if I can snag something.

You cant make a new account. It has to have 1 year tenure and an active gold membership in order to claim one.

Gifs I do love this but there will be people making accounts after accounts claiming these for money purpose only. I just want 1 decent gamer tag and will not be trying to get as many as I can to sell for profit. I hope others do the same as me so we can share these awesome tags and hopefully find the one we always wanted.

If you would read the post you would know that the account taking the gamertag needs to have Xbox Live Gold and at least a 1 year tenure making it impossible for new accounts with only silver to take the tags.

Oh I see. Well hopefully this works out good then.

And recently people using turbos have been banned. So there might be a lot of banned og tags tomorrow lol.

If only Sony would do the same thing. So many inactive accounts....
