Microsoft feared XBLA would “completely destroy the console industry”

4.7
In the early days of Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft had a real fear that it would “destroy the console industry.”

The concern was that lower price points and digital delivery would shake up the traditional retail model of high-priced games sold through bricks-and-mortar stores.

“There was a legitimate fear that Xbox Live Arcade was going to cannibalize retail sales and completely destroy the console industry,” XBLA creator Greg Canessa told IGN.

“That was actually a quote I got from one of the internal folks.”

Xbox Live Arcade was one of the big success stories on Xbox 360, with well over 700 games released via the digital marketplace.

Halo Arcade games are fun but with a lot of them its a hit or miss, weird how they thought it would destroy the console industry though.

They didn't fear the arcade games themselves, they feared what would come next which is full games being able to download, then eventual retail stores will slowly deplete and as we get more digital, and technology evolves eventually we could be seeing no need for a console or even a computer to play video games. One day it could get to the point of just a smart tv connected to the internet streaming games online. Now that's a long ways away but arcade games was what they feared would start this process of console elimination.

I really want an XBLA on Xbox One, I loved all the indie games and apps like M2AF were so useful

I miss the $1 games that xbox 360 had to offer:/ They were usually pretty trashy but they were good fun to play with friends. The arcade games were kinda cool, but they were overpriced by a good bit. With a very minimal amount of content, they weren't quite worth what was asked for them.

The amount they would get from there higher priced stuff would hold more profit than the arcade.
