Twitter 140-Character Limit About to Change

4.8
It was reported earlier today that Twitter is looking at ways to address its 140 characters per tweet limitation, with one proposal suggesting a maximum of 10,000 characters in a single tweet. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has indicated, via a tweet, that changes will be made with the way the social media platform handles longer messages.

In his tweet, which consists solely of a screenshot of a previously written message, Dorsey acknowledges that a change is necessary because the current 140-character limitation poses a great inconvenience for users who desire to post longer tweets. It requires them to write longer messages, take a screenshot of them, and then upload them to the social media platform.

Dorsey does not explicitly refer to the recent 10,000-character report in his tweet, but he indicates that similar changes are being considered as he praises text-based tweets as an alternative to uploading screenshots because they allow users to highlight and search for written content.

While one cannot be certain what the changes to Twitter will involve, Dorsey's comment that tweetstorms—rapid and sudden increases in activity regarding a certain subject—will not be disappearing from Twitter lends credence to the previous 10,000-character report which suggested that tweets will retain their current 140-character size by default for readability and shareability purposes.

Miss I don't understand the point of a 10,000 character limit. Who in their right mind would sit there and type that many letters onto a Twitter post...

The drama queens will love this.
We will hate it :|

Need to keep it low something like 300 max

I like the 140 limit, makes twitter to be honest.

Creatively I don't think 10,000 should be the limit. That's far too much. I'd say anywhere from 750-1000 would be plenty.

That is still too much.
I think 300 would be good.
No more than that :/

Synybun Doesn't really make sense to have a character limit so that people have to use several tweets for one message.

The character limit was implemented so that the tweets could fit into one SMS message.
