Sony Reveals Over 5.7 Million PS4s Sold During Holiday Season

Since its release in November 2013, the PS4 has seen great success and sales that have already outpaced its predecessor consoles, and today Sony announced that the system has reached a new milestone with lifetime sales just nearing 36 million units.

In a statement from Sony, the company confirmed that “cumulative sell through” of the PS4 since its launch have reached 35.9 million units worldwide, marking a big rise from the company’s previous report of just over 30 million units at the end of November.

Specifically, the rise is tied to the consoles sales during the holiday season, which Sony explains internally represented sales from November 22nd, 2015 through January 2nd, 2016 for North America, Latin America, and Europe, and from November 23 – January 3rd, 2016 in Japan and Asia: in total, console sales of the PS4 represented more than 5.7 million units sold during those timeframes worldwide.

In addition to hardware numbers, Sony also confirmed that software sales (through digital and retail) have now reached more than 35 million copies across all PS4 titles during the holiday period, though numbers for other platforms (such as PS3 and PS Vita) weren’t specified.

Sony also highlighted that subscriptions to PlayStation Plus have increased by 60% compared to the same time last year, though no specific numbers on the total of its membership at this time were not revealed.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House also commented in a statement on the console’s success so far, and also speaking on the great year that will lie ahead for PlayStation fans in 2016:

“We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever.”

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, New Hot Shots Golf (working title) and The Last Guardian, this coming year.”

Yeah thats true that, Xbox one over PS4 all day but knowing me i would be stupid enough to buy it so then ill have both next gen consoles.

if you were stupid enough to buy an xbox one you shouldn't even own a console.

what if you're "stupid" enough to have a 360, the xbone, ps4, and my built pc all in my setup?

is the xbone really going downhill is that why you said that cause from the start of the current gen the xbone tried so hard to be an all in one console not a gaming console and its only 900p people buy the console for gaming not for all in one uses, give me a reason why its stupid to buy a ps4 a console that does 1080p 60 on most games to a xbone which is 900p 60 on most games, yes xbone could of been a better seller if it wasnt an all in one console hint why people bought the ps4 instead plus on top of that no stupid monthly updates to the console hint why ps4 is better but not as good a pc can be everyone knows pc is way better and you would have to be stupid to buy any consoles(besides the exclusives) ps no im not a fan boy i have all consoles

Probably the most illiterate post I've seen all day. First time I've ever heard somebody complain about "Updates." As if updates are a bad thing, I'd rather my console constantly be on new firmware rather than getting a update every couple months. Get yo weight up

bosox3 Sony is soo wrapped up in their numbers. How about they spend more time fixing their netowrk and releasing new IP's.
My PS4 sits more than it gets played. Every time I get excited about a game..it gets delayed.

An Xbox One is cheaper at the moment, I'd recommend buying one if that's what you really think of the PS4.
