Xbox chief Phil Spencer: The Xbox One will have a console successor

4.7
How’s your Xbox One doing? Is Microsoft’s ‘next-gen’ console already starting to feel a bit dated, or is your wallet starting to itch? If either of those are true, then the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has some good news for you: there will be another Xbox after the One.

In an interview with The Verge, Phil Spencer talked about his and the Xbox fans’ passion for what he calls ‘the console experience’. This sits at the heart of Microsoft’s reasoning for pushing ahead with the Xbox One and its gaming partnerships. But it’s also the spark that will lead to a new generation of consoles in the following years.

That may be surprising to some, who’ve noticed that the entire gaming industry is slowly moving towards streaming. There’s no doubt that eventually, the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo brands will only represent software that lives inside of an ecosystem. Want to play games on your Ultra 4K 3D wrap-around VR HoloRoom? Just open up the Xbox app and you’ll have access to all your games: no disks, no consoles, just streaming.

But that marvelous future is still a few years away; just enough time to give the Xbox One’s successor a reason to exist. Microsoft might already be working on the Xbox Two (or is it the Xbox 1080?) as companies usually spend years on design and engineering before they put out hardware products. Unfortunately, it’s still a bit early for any details to have leaked out, and the Xbox One still has a long life ahead of it.

Regardless, we’ll be keeping an eye out for any details on Microsoft’s plans for its future console.

Well they have learned a lot since there release of the xbox one. I do not think they will make the same mistake"s" that they did with the xbox one.

Linear Elite Dangerous VR Minimum Requirements, probably the first AAA title to show a real depiction of what VR is going to need:

- Top spec i7
- GTX 980

Consoles are going to have come a long way incredibly quickly, or they're going to be behind. They're already laughably behind average PC components (they can't even compete with an i3 and 750Ti).

People like you make me laugh. I mean seriously. You don't even both to research things which are right beneath your nose. Here take a look at this for though.

X360 has 512MB of RAM.
It runs BF4 which has a min req of 4GB RAM on PC.

Then compare this to the Xbox One/PS4. The ports are optimized and will be until the end of the console cycle, where you end up with games like BF4.

Clearly, it's not the console limiting what's available. It's the developers knowledge of the system and the effort put into it. The statistics are all there, and it all points to that exact conclusion if you look close enough :)

You're forgetting a simple thing my friend.

My computer is a computer, does many, meany other things with that 4GB of RAM.

I'm a software developer, and please let me tell you, we spend most of our lunchtimes laughing at people like you.

I can build you a console-like computer for around £350. It'll also be a computer. Is there really any argument?

And this is surprising? The Xbox One was a little bit of a fail.

The Xbox One is still so young haha I couldn't imagine the next gen! Just think if it actually goes into virtual reality and holograms how sick would that be? Microsoft is learning what kind of things the community likes, think of the Xbox One as a system that the users are upgrading through all the update requests, this next system is going to come out with all the essentials and more!

N one has the internet connection quality, or reliability to even go with streaming. It just won't happen. I'm not even thinking about those with Monthly cap limits which incur charges if they're broken. The infrastructure isn't there for any of it. There's no way they can make anywhere near as much money from this new business model compared to the current one. At least not for the foreseeable future.

This was pretty obvious

im ok with the One. I hope this one last as long as the 360 did. That way we dont have to change consoles every two years.
