Xbox head: I don't know if we can beat Sony

4.7
As this console generation nears two years-old, it's no secret that Xbox has spent the entirety of that time playing catch-up to PlayStation. Sony's platform started off with a huge lead in sales, and while Xbox may have closed the gap to some degree, PS4 still holds a sizable advantage. In fact, it's so large that Microsoft's top brass questions whether it can ever recover.

At the recent GeekWire Summit, when asked whether Xbox One could beat PS4 this generation, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said "You know, I don't know. You know the length of the generation... [Sony has] a huge lead and they have a good product. I love the content, the games line-up that we have."

Understandably, Spencer chalks a good chunk of the sales disparity up to losing consumer trust before the console ever launched. "I feel really good about the position and the product and the brand right now, but I was at the GameStop Manager's Meeting about three weeks ago and I'm sitting with 5,000 GameStop managers in Las Vegas and they'd come up and they still have customers that walk in the store that think that the Xbox One won't play used games."

Spencer elaborated "Just to be clear, Xbox One has always played used games from day one. But that perception that gets set early on, because consumers have five seconds to internalise your brand and your message and then they move on. They're not going to spend time to read what we say afterwards. 'Oh Xbox One, that's that thing. If I want it I'll go buy it and if I don't I won't.' Regaining that trust and the mindshare with the customer, the gamer, is incredibly difficult."

Reversing that mindset feeds directly into Xbox's ultimate goal these days: Gaining as many customers as it can. Spencer says that his team isn't even motivated by beating Sony anymore. According to him, it just wants to build a platform that's for the consumer, not for the people making it. He thinks that doing that will gain back that trust, which will, in turn, lead to more people adopting the Xbox One.

Philly boy has the douchiest hair style ever.

But yeah no shit phil spencer when you guys set these first impression things like "xbox will not play used games" of course most people arent going to do more research and read up on it because youve set the first impression.. I used to love xbox but I mean its so garbage when I look at it as a whole. Im not even saying playstation is better, im just saying as a whole the current gen consoles dont seem very impressive to me. Xbox has become a majority casual thing, and im not really a casual "gamer"

I really feel like Phil Spencer can really make The Xbox One better than the PS4. The work that he has done since Don Mattrick left has been pretty much outstanding. They are really listening to feedback, and are capitalizing on the big idea's of what we the gamer's want to be included inside the Xbox.

As long as they fix whats wrong now , eventually they'll be up there

VatasyPosted:

All they need to do is listen to the feedback they get.

Listen to the customers and respond to feedback and it will soon catch up.

They have to listen to what people say i mean there nothing worse that can happen

Maybe not, though that doesn't matter...Its not making the Xbox One a shit console for being in second place. It just makes Microsoft more hungry to keep improving the console and making it better and better.

Phil Spencer has been making the Xbox such an awesome platform since that idiot Don Mattrick only cared about driving the console into the ground.

"In Spencer we trust"

To achieve, xbox simply just have to believe. They must be ambitious and listen to their users.

ME0W Maybe you shouldn't have made so many mistakes that were completely obvious to everybody but you apparently.

You do realize phil spencer wasn't here when they were going downhill? He's the one that has came in and fixed most of the issues. He's also made things possible that nobody thought would be. Backwards compatibility is the perfect example

If people actually understood what the DRM system was, they'd realize how retarded they were for complaining about it. The main feature was going to be that you and 10 other friends could practically gameshare eachother. How would you like to pay 6$ for a brand new digital game? Would've been nice if everyone didn't just complain about sh*t they didn't even know entirely what it was.

It would've been nice to game share, but it was mainly Don Mattrik's lead that caused all of this. They wanted a always online console and it would get locked up after 24 hours of no internet connection and the used marked on Xbox would have dissipated. Phil Spencer's lead has turned a lot of things around.Consoles are just not ready for full DRM in this generation.
