PlayStation won’t be following Xbox with backwards compatibility

4.6
Head of PlayStation Europe, Jim Ryan, says PlayStation has no intention of following suit with backwards compatibility and here’s why.

Talking to MCV about the Xbox announcement, he said “It is an entirely legitimate approach, and if you are seeking to upgrade 360 owners to Xbox One, it is a very logical approach to take.”

Ryan commented that the Xbox announcement wasn’t very clear on how the feature would work, adding ” I suspect there might be a few twists in that particular tale. But we will see”.

He confirmed that Sony would be investing in software updates like SharePlay, Play as you Download, and Suspend/ Resume features.

“Unfortunately there are just not sufficent enough software engineers in the world for everyone to do everything. Each platform holder has to make their choices, we made one and they made another. Their choice is entirely legitimate, and I think our choice is legitimate, too. In some ways it is quite nice to have points of difference between the two platforms, and people will decide which approach suits them best.”

Addressing the backwards compatibility feature of consoles, Ryan said “We have experience of backwards compatibility. The earliest PS3 model was backwards compatible with PS2, and it is a much requested feature… but actually it’s not so greatly used.

“On balance, we are happy with our approach and we don’t wish to be defensive about it at all. But as I say, both approaches are legitimate.”

Are you disappointed this feature won’t be a part of PS4? Will you use it on your Xbox One? Let us know in the comments.

StrategicsKEY This does suck I'd prefer to have backwards compatibility. But it's whatever we get what we get

Unlucky xbox cares more about their users

Its not about who cares the most about their users they both just want to do different things maybe at some point each console will add in what the other one is developing now :)

Bit of a lame excuse from the giant. Not exactly inspiring confidence

Znait Meanwhile on PC, every game still works!

lol pc cant emulate any consoles after the gamecube and ps2.... so no, not "every game still works!"

He was talking about PC games from last gen. And PC can emulate the Wii and there are 360 and PS3 emulators currently in development capable of booting retail games. They are far from playable but it's a start.

I just dont understand why this couldn't be an option when the Xbox one and Ps4 was released. I was the first one in my group of friends to get a Xbox 360 while they were still at the original xbox playing halo 2. I personally popped halo 2 right back into my 360 and continued playing with them until they moved to the 360. Now i just dont understand why its so tough for the "Next Gen" to accomplish this. I know some of it is profit but i mean come on.

We dont have a need to emulate every console.
Most of the games on the newer systems came to PC anyways. (excluding Nintendo)

And what he was saying was that every game that was released to PC in the last console cycle still works on PC without the need to emulate.
