Nintendo's new 'NX' console will reportedly run Android

4.7
Nintendo has already said that it won't be talking about its new NX console until 2016, but that hasn't stopped a few tantalising details from slipping out to the press. Nikkei reports that the new hardware could use the Android operating system, as Nintendo seeks a more open platform that's already been embraced by third-party developers. We're firmly in rumors and speculation territory here, but there's some basis for the claim. Nintendo has hinted that the NX will be positioned alongside the 3DS and the Wii U, rather than as a direct replacement for either system. The Wii U has been a commercial flop, but that doesn't mean the NX will be a traditional home console competing directly with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It could be something completely different -- fans have suggested a hybrid device that gamers could play both at home and on the go.

Portability would play to Android's strengths, particularly if Nintendo wants to leverage its upcoming phone and tablet games. However, if the company does indeed use the platform, there's no guarantee that it'll look like the typical Android experience found on phones and tablets. The Wii U and 3DS suffer from sluggish operating systems, menus and apps -- Nintendo could use a heavily modified version of Google's platform to offload the problem and focus on what it does best, which is making high quality games.

I haven't been interested in anything Nintendo related in years, it's all gone so downhill IMO. It's a shame. I still give my N64 and SNES a go now and again.

-Myth_ how many more consoles are they going to make

A lot because gaming companies have to constantly make new consoles to stay in the market.

They honestly aren't going nowhere. They've been doing pretty bad.

Nintendo connecting their NX console to Androids could go either way for them in the market.

JRMH They need to just move into the mobile market; I'd love an actual version of pokemon for my phone... Plus, they'd have so many profitable opportunities with iAP that way.

Did you just suggest Nintendo ruin their games with iAP?

7yle No matter what they do they will never reach the heights on Xbox and Playstation. Although at least they are trying something new, props to them.

They were on top last gen with the Wii so anything is possible.

That was only for a little while because of the hype of the fact that wii used motion controllers for games but then kinect one uped them and after that all the hype left.

The Wii was the best selling console of last gen which in a business is all that matters. And Nintendo are kicking the shit out of Sony in the handheld market with the 3DS thats selling millions and the PS Vita which sold so poorly Sony are ready to abandon it.

How does "best selling" equate to, "all that matters" from a business perspective? Console profit? Games sales? Subscription? As well as secondary importance such as value for money, customer service? etc
