Nintendo is working on its next console, says Miyamoto

Nintendo's internal teams are hard at work on Nintendo's next games console, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said.

In an interview with AP, the designer said that while the firm remains very much committed to developing games for Wii U, it also has teams working up idea for the company's next major hardware offering.

"We're focused on providing a robust line-up of Wii U software for next year. It seems like we've managed to do that this year and people are very happy with what we've done on Wii U," he said.

"For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we're busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be," he went on to confirm.

This doesn't come as a surprise since it's typical for platform holders to begin work on their next machine soon after their last hardware launch, but this does come a the first official acknowledgment of Nintendo's work on a new console.

Miyamoto also spoke briefly of the key role Mario typically plays in showing off the evolution of Nintendo's new hardware. "With each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game," he said.

Nintendo highlighted encouraging Wii U sales growth in October as it posted improved financial results for the first half of its business year.

The company said Wii U sales have been on an upward curve since Mario Kart 8's release in May. Nintendo sold 610,000 Wii U consoles in its most recent quarter, for a total of 1.12 million in the April-September period, taking lifetime Wii U sales to 7.29 million units since launching in November 2012.

They may be working on it now but it will be a few years until they announce/release it surely?

I stopped buying Nintendo products when the Wii U was released. I don't think I will ever buy another product unless they step up.

Nintendo has been declining recently. There are only a hand full of games that are keeping the WiiU alive at this point.

Nintendo really need to step it up to the level that xbox/playstation is on if they want to compete in the console market.

Nintendo definitely needs to release a high quality system, or else I could see a lot of people stop purchasing their consoles. A lot of people I know only bought the wii u for the new smash bros.

Nintendo hasn't been releasing good products recently hopefully this one is good.

xDylan Lmao, because the WiiU was such a smash hit around the world

I hope this isn't sarcastic... The WiiU was better than the PS4 or the X1. Maybe not in specs, but if we're looking at specs, the PC destroys any console ever.

The Wii U has the most innovative experience, and the games actually feel somewhat fresh on Wii.

The console they plan on releasing is probably not going to be like the Wii U at all. I don't know what it will be but I'm hype no matter what.

I think they can do a lot better if they try to make it like it's competitors. But, not exactly like them. If they were to due that, they'd see a huge spike in sales, even though they already have a good amount of sales considering the target demographic.

Probably gonna be another bust, Nintendo has slowly been turning into the past.

Nintendos influence is dying anyway, they need to make a comeback.
