Halo 2 Anniversary campaign won't run at 1080p natively

4.5
Halo 2: Anniversary's campaign will not run at a native 1080p resolution as many would have expected, Microsoft has confirmed.

The face-lifted rendition of the original Xbox game will run at a sub-full HD resolution of 1328x1080 at 60fps (frames per second), 343 executive producer Dan Ayoub has revealed

It will be the only game in the four-game collection that fails to hit the full 1080p/60fps benchmark. This, according to Ayoub, is due to the game having to run both the new and original sound and physics engines simultaneously.

"During development we were really pleased with the way the engine and buffer allowed us to switch instantly between classic and Anniversary engines that are running simultaneously - however that, as you might expect, put a hit on resolution," Ayoub told IGN.

"The campaign of Halo 2: Anniversary looked fantastic at 720p with the level of detail and clarity it gave us, but like every other aspect of the game and tech, we wanted to push it further."

He went on: "So in the last weeks of development, our teams were able to meet a stretch goal and the campaign of Halo 2: Anniversary now runs 60 fps at a crisp resolution of 1328x1080, which is a significant and meaningful boost in image quality we think fans are really going to appreciate. All of the other games across the entire package of The Master Chief Collection run 60 fps at 1920x1080 native."

The drop in resolution to 1328x1080 means that, while the vertical resolution remains identical to a full 1080p image, the horizontal pixel count is paired back by just over 30 per cent, and then likely upscaled to 1080p to fit the full 1080p resolution of an HD display.

The Halo: The Master Chief Collection release date is November 11 on Xbox One. It will include Halo Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4, plus guaranteed access to the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta, which will commence in December.

Halo 2 map 'Warlock' was recently confirmed as the final of the six maps to be refreshed for Halo: The Master Chief Collection..

Yes it sucks that these "next gen" consoles cannot run every game at 1080p is pretty pathetic imo. It's just sad lol but I care more about FPS and this game is going to be fun af anyways so it don't matter

"Resolution is just a number". You are just a moron.
"I only care about framerate." Framerate is definitely more important, I agree.

Fact is, in 2014, "next-gen" consoles shouldn't have to compromise at all. 1080p shouldn't be a feature. It should be a standard. You should assume every game runs 1080p/60FPS. That is the problem people have.

We (PC gamers) are moving on to 1440p. 4k is not a realistic option right now, so don't listen to the PC trolls who claim they are 4k gamers, they aren't.

We are looking to further technology, not play catch-up. So, if you create a new product consistently trying to catch-up to what is already available, you are not innovating at all.

Doesn't even matter to me since I've never played it. I bet it will look fine nonetheless.

Skama I really don't understand how people care about 1080p. Its just a number. Quick fun fact for you - 95% of the HD channels you get in your home aren't 1080p, they're 720p. So the HD you have been accustomed to isn't even the best.

Also quick question. How come all these new amazing 1080p realistic looking games come out and get old and boring within the first few weeks, but games from back in the day that were 240p or worse were playable for months and months?

because in those times people used lower resolution displays, the so called "next gen" consoles should be able to keep up with the times, no real reason for consoles now unless you like your timed exclusives #PCMasterRace

For thoughs of us with a tv bigger then 32in in you can definitely see the difference. That aside its also the principle of things we paid 400$ to 500$ on a new console in 2013 it should be able to run 1080p witch has been standered for years without a sweat. 4k is just around the corner so what there going to come out with another xbox in 10 years that can finally hit 1080 then we have to wait another 10 years for one that can hit 2k (witch by the way is already possible on phones) then finally 30 years from now we will have a console that can hit 4k. i dont know what cable you subscribe to but i have direct tv and comcast and the channels are all in 1080i for the most part on both and 1080p when watching pay per view and hbo and stuff.
