COD: Advanced Warfare pre-orders are 50% behind Ghosts, says analyst

Activision is one of the biggest video game publishers in the world thanks to a handful of gigantic properties. But as it unleashes its upcoming megahit, its most successful brand of the last 10 years looks like it’s starting to lose its sales luster.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare preorders continue to track more than 50 percent behind 2013’s Ghosts, according to Cowen and Company analyst Doug Cruetz. The industry-tracking expert notes that Advanced Warfare is tracking 80 percent behind 2012’s Black Ops II. Call of Duty game regularly generate $1 billion in revenue for Activision, but Ghosts didn’t perform as well as Black Ops II. If Advanced Warfare sells worse than Ghosts, this could signify that the franchise is on a permanent decline.

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that a poor-performing Call of Duty is still likely going to end the year as one of the industry’s best-selling games. In a note to investors, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia says that he expects Advanced Warfare to sell 17 million copies — that’s down 15 percent from Ghosts’ 20 million copies sold.

“We believe that the preorders [for Call of Duty] need to accelerate significantly over the next few weeks,” Cruetz wrote. “Or else the evidence for meaningfully weaker performance by Advanced Warfare vs. Ghosts will, in our opinion, become too strong to rationalize.”

The Cowen analyst notes that Call of Duty’s biggest problem right now is that gamers are still busy playing Destiny. If players don’t switch that game off and start looking toward their next shooter, Advanced Warfare could get off to a sluggish start.

“Call of Duty faces a very competitive slate following its launch on Nov. 4, with Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Dragon Age all scheduled for release between the Nov. 11 and Nov. 18,” said Cruetz. “With light competition pre-release and heavy competition post-release, we think a slow start for CoD could be difficult to overcome.”

Evanrude10 honestly. people need to stop saying this looks like titanfall with out the titans, the only thing that looks even remotely similar is the jumping aspect of the exo-suit, this does NOT look like titanfall at all. I will be getting this game just to see if it is any good but if it turns out to be trash then I will surely be done with COD.

when have you been able to swim around the map in a multiplayer game on cod? when we say it looks like titan fall we mean mostly the jumping around as you said but also everything else is just to much and ruines the runngun style we know and love dont let this cod ruine it for you at least give bo3 a chance then make that decision its unfair to let AW decide cods fate lol

haha yea I get you man, I'm just saying that I dont really think the run and gun aspect will be ruined, it just looks a lot faster than previous cods, and I'm just hoping this game will be fun unlike previous cods

This is kinda sad. I do think it will pick up after reviews and that come out about the game. The game is different and really looks great.

I just want zombies... One more year :(.

But honestly, the best cod was cod4. They need to make another cod like that.

No surprise.
Ghosts was a let down.
My reason stands not because a different company, but because people thought Ghosts was good but it was trash.
Who knows if this AW will even be good?

WWII It's (In my opinion) because of Ghosts. Ghosts was an awful game, why would people want to buy the next Call of Duty if the previous one was awful?

Because ( my opinion ) dumb people think that. Why base an older game by a different company and a new game made by a new company?

You can't base a different game made by a different company on the next game that has no relevance to the previous other than that it's still CoD.

Personally, I think it will do well. SH made Mw3, one of the best CoDs out so I think AW will do well seeing how SH know how to make games.

sledge hammer did not make mw3! Are you a complete R.t.rd? Mw3 was made by infinity ward the same company that made ghosts! Sledge hammer helped them a Lil but that's about it! Also how is mw3 one of the best cods? More people played cod 4, mw2, black ops and black ops 2 than mw3! So u might want to do ur research you moron!

I think this is because of Ghosts. That game was really bad IMO and it could've lost some cod fans.
