Destiny new-gen upgrade free for last-gen digital buyers

4.6
Destiny players who buy the game for last-gen systems won't have to pay again for a new-gen copy of Bungie's online shooter - as long as they purchase it digitally within the next few months.

Bungie and Activision revealed over the weekend that customers who buy Destiny on PS3 or Xbox 360 through their respective download stores have through January 15, 2015 to redeem a free copy of the game on the system's new-gen counterpart. Switching from PS3 to Xbox One or vice versa is not supported.

The deal also extends to content from the Digital Guardian Edition and Expansion Pass.

Players won't have to start over to experience the new-gen version of the game, as account progress is shared within console families. The last-gen copies of the game remain playable even after owners claim their PS4 or Xbox One counterparts.

Activision announced on Monday that Destiny had become the most-preordered new video game IP in history.

Bungie plans to add a substantial amount of new content to the game in the form of at least two paid expansions, the first of which is planned to go live in December.

In North America, Microsoft has launched a campaign to coincide with the Destiny launch, rewarding new Xbox One console purchases with a free full price game of the customer's choice.

The promotion makes Xbox One the cheapest new-gen console to purchase alongside Destiny in the region, despite Sony offering a limited edition white PS4 system bundled with the game.

UnD3aD_Stealth its alright but they just find a way to make money.

But they aren't making money. If you're buying the game anyways, then you're getting a second game absolutely free. How are they making money?

Dezz Well this is kinda good i guess. At least they are trying to be helpful.

Of course it is good! They could just go away with this deal entirely.

I got both Xbox's, so I'm totally doing this. If my friends ever decide to get either version of the game, I am totally set. I do wonder how the achievements are going to work though. Can I get some of the achievements on the other console just by logging on if I got it on the other? Like the max level achievements. Or will I have to do them twice?

Grimlock so if I got both consoles I can just go get destiny on the 360 and get it free on the one. im not sure if thats what they mean.
But its a great deal.

You have to buy the digital version on the xbox 360 in order to get a free digital upgrade to the xbox one version.

I'm getting it for the one but it's still a sweet deal.

No incentive for already having the current game. Companies need to learn something.

Miss I'd rather just buy it on the One than on 360. Get to see it's full capabilities.

Some people are getting the xbox one around christmas, so they can upgrade then for free.
