Square Enix has moved to defend its decision to enter a timed exclusivity deal with Xbox for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

In a Q&A posted on the game's official blog, the publisher states that the decision to sign a deal with Xbox was not made lightly.

"Of course [the fans were considered when making this decision]," said the firm. "We did not make this decision lightly. Our goal is to build the best game that we possibly can, and our relationship with Microsoft will help us realize our vision for the game."

Square went on to say that it "didn't intend to cause any confusion with the announcement", and the vague messaging following it. "The Microsoft Gamescom stage was a great place to make the initial announcement, but not necessarily to go into details," it said.

"Our deal with Microsoft has a duration," it restated, following earlier confirmation from Microsoft. "We aren't discussing details of the deal, and are focused on delivering a great game on Xbox One and Xbox 360."

At Gamescom, Microsoft and Square Enix announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider will launch exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 holiday 2015, sparking a huge backlash from the PlayStation community.

Xbox head Phil Spencer said recently that Microsoft's move to tie up Xbox exclusivity for Rise of the Tomb Raider was motivated by a desire to compete with Sony in the action adventure genre.

"I'm a big fan of Uncharted and I wish we had an action adventure game of that ilk. We've started some, and we've looked at them. But we don't have one today of that quality. This is an opportunity," he said.
