PSN down after suffering DDOS attack

4.2
Sony isn't expected to begin maintenance on the PlayStation Network until tomorrow, but PlayStation users were surprised to wake up and find that the online service is already down.

Upon trying to login to PSN, users are greeted with error code "NW-31456-9," which reads "Cannot connect to the server within the time limit."

I got the error code: "NW-31201-7," which simply reads "Cannot connect to the server."

Apparently, it is the result of a DDOS attack by a hacking group known as Lizard Squad. The group admitted to the attack, but didn't really give a reason other than the usual "Sony is a greedy corporation" excuse.

The official Sony PlayStation hasn't confirmed if this is the case, but Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley acknowledged the "large scale DDOS," adding that "it's almost under control now."

DRPZ PSN has always been weak, that's why xbox is better.

Xbox has nothing to do with this.

well, Xbox doesn't randomly get hacked/ddosed every other week. So it is a very valid point.

That's because MS specializes in areas involving stuff like that. They're a software company after all

This is the reason why i bought my Xbox One. Sony obviously still hasn't taken the time to get better servers with better protection from these attacks. It's nice to see errors in 1080p i guess....

First PSN was hacked by Anonymous a few years back, and now this. That sucks for PS3 and PS4 users.

This is ridiculous whats the point.

Michael_Mosson Kinda annoying, I mean it's great that they are calling them out for being greedy, but the people that are most affected by this sort of thing are the users and we are the ones getting our accounts hacked too.

That's the point they are trying to make. Users are now paying for PSN which as a result users would expect better security against things like this however that obviously hasn't happened. By ddosing PSN it makes Sony realise if they want to keep their users happy they have to invest in preventing this from being able to happen.

I guess people think that Sony has changed, they are still the game company that they were 2 years ago.

You would've thought a big company like Sony would be able to prevent even the largest of DDoS attacks, no?
