Call of Duty “not immune” to slump in preorder demand

4.8
Preorders for games across retail are in decline according to the boss of Call of Duty publisher Activision.

And although demand for Advanced Warfare is better than last year’s Ghosts release, he noted that the franchise is “not immune” to the slump in preorders currently hitting retailers.

Speaking in a call to investors, CEO Eric Hirschberg highlighted three reasons why he thinks customers are preordering less games.

“You guys can see the same thing we see industry-wide, which is that there’s been sort of a secular downturn as it relates to preorders.

“We think that’s happening due to a number of factors: things like increased digital consumption, particularly on the next-gen consoles; titles being widely available on day one; and the decline overall for demand of software on the previous gen consoles,” reports GamesIndustry International.

While those three points stand as measurable factors for a business like Activision, critics of preorders may also suggest that there’s a fatigue amongst consumers.

Major releases now have a number of special editions and alternative content that can only be found in preordered packages. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs had 9 different editions with multiple extras available for release.

This causes confusion and frustration to consumers trying to decide on the right release for them, a problem confounded by particular preorder bonuses only being available at specific retailers.

And when consumers see that previously ‘preorder exclusive’ content is later available to all after a game has been released, that only causes resentment from fans who felt pressured to buy into a particular preorder package at the expense of another.

...Or your game **** sucks, Ghosts was awful. Extinction was a joke and Multiplayer was falsely hyped up by their 'Slaves' TmarTn and Ali A, DLC Was so forgetful they re-made and re-textured maps which destroys nostalgia and don't get me started with the "shipment" Remake. COD Needs to simplify its create-a-class and go back to 1 attachments 3 perks and a pistol, launcher or special. I hate when I die by someone who has 42 thousand perks and 5 weapons.

Yes! It bugs me when I preorder a game just for the exclusives to find out a month after the game releases everybody else gets it.

If call of duty Maker's stop producing the same game ever year with revamped antiquities, then maybe they would sell more. Call of duty just is to continuous for people to go drop $63+ on a game each year that is making the same thing. My thoughts call of duty lost it after Bo2.

OR and I'm just thinking aloud here, maybe it's because COD in general has become so shocking bad that no one wants it?? And to all those thinking Sledgehammer will magically pull off the best COD ever...I genuinely feel sorry for you.

There's only so many times you can rehash a game and expect people to buy it. Look at the truly great games out there, many if not all if them have only ever had 2-3 sequels and maybe only 1 of those was good.

I'm not against cod aw doing well or proving me wrong, but I know I'm not alone in thinking that from recent experience with the franchise, pre ordering really isn't a main concern now, I'm not saying I won't play it, but it's defiantly not getting any money from me until critics I respect and gamers I trust tell me it's good. Only then will I give it a shot.

I really hate when companies have this many editions because they all get sold so quickly.

It is also bad for me because I never know which edition to get until it is too late.
