Windows 8.1 Update 2 coming August 12th

4.5
Last week, a rumour emerged via a Russian site, claiming that Microsoft was planning to deliver the second update to Windows 8.1 on August 12. The screenshot that supported that information referred to an upcoming 'August update'.

Today, Rod Trent from Windows IT Pro reports that one of his sources has confirmed that info as correct, and the update will be delivered on the next Patch Tuesday, August 12.

His source also confirmed what the update will be called. Some had expected that it might be named "Windows 8.1 Update 2", or perhaps even "Windows 8.2". Sadly, it seems that Microsoft still suffers from being hopeless when it comes to naming things - following on from the Windows 8.1 Update that was released earlier this year, the next update will be called "August Update".

Could the choice of name indicate that Microsoft might shift to a monthly update cadence for Windows 8.1? Sadly, that's not what we're hearing at the moment - in fact, this may well be the last significant update for Windows 8.1 before the next major Windows release, codename Threshold, arrives early next year.

While the previous update was mandatory, the August Update will not be, so you can - for whatever reason - choose not to install it, and you'll still be able to get other updates without issue. However, if you want to install the August Update, you must have installed Windows 8.1 Update previously.

Microsoft will reportedly announce the August Update next week, ahead of its rollout on Patch Tuesday.

Dusknoir Windows 8 is only good on tablets, on PC's its not that great.

I'd disagree with you on that one. It's just as smooth on PC as it is on a tablet or smart phone.

Yeah, it's so smooth and organized, I love it.
i disagree, it is very very good for a pc, very fast and works like a charm.

I literally have like 4 tiles. I just hit the desktop button and treat it like it's windows 7. So if this update helps with speed and security then great but anything else I am not really interested in.

It's cool that there's another update but I will probably just stick with Windows 7.

Windows 8 isn't that bad, it's the exact same as Windows 7 except the start menu is different. In some aspects, I even like the newer, full-screen start menu because it allows for more programs to be displayed on the screen, and it doesn't restrict the start menu to a simple corner.

I use windows 8 but I could count the times I've used the metro to do something on one hand.

Victoria_Moore Im using windows 8.1 with the windows 7 start menu plugin by stardock, which works great.
But it would be cool if they actually bring back the start menu though.

Yea, they are. It looks pretty good aswell.

Communism Am I the only one that doesn't use Windows 8? I prefer Windows 7, just easier to use in my opinion.

Everyone does, they are going to add a start menu back to windows 8.

It was a leap of faith and it failed.
