PlayStation is outselling Xbox by more than 3:1

4.1
The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launched at more or less the same time, but Sony's console has enjoyed greater success than that of Microsoft. Indeed, it's no secret that the PS4 has been outselling the Xbox One - earlier this month we reported that the latest figures suggest that Sony had sold around two million more of its next-gen consoles compared with Microsoft.

Sony reported its quarterly financials earlier today, and as part of that report, it disclosed that it had sold a combined total of 3.5 million PS4 and PS3 units during the quarter ending June 30. As MCV UK notes, Sony has said that the strong sales of its PlayStation 4 are compensating for declining interest in the PS3, and given how well the PS4 has been selling, it seems safe to assume that a pretty big chunk of those 3.5m sales were of the newer console.

Compare this with the latest official figure provided by Microsoft, when it recently reported its quarterly results. The company said that it had sold a combined total of 1.1m Xbox One and Xbox 360 units during the same quarter.

Now, we must be absolutely clear that we have no firm indication of how these figures - 3.5m PlayStations sold versus 1.1m Xbox units - break down between the newer- and older-generation consoles, so any conclusions we draw are based on assumptions.

So if we assume that the ratio of new versus old console sales is roughly equivalent at Sony and Microsoft, that would indicate that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One by three-to-one. But even if we generously (and improbably) assumed that 80% of Xbox sales last quarter were Xbox Ones (around 880,000), and only 50% of PlayStation sales were of the PS4 (1,750,000), Sony would still be selling twice as many next-gen consoles as Microsoft.

Given that Sony has indicated rising interest in the PS4 versus weaker sales of the PS3, and that we know the PS4 is selling like hotcakes, it seems more likely that the proportion of new-to-old console sales is similar to that of Microsoft. Since overall PlayStation sales are three times higher than total Xbox sales, this would support the notion that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One by 3:1.

It's worth noting that Microsoft has said that sales of the Xbox One doubled in the last three weeks of the quarter, following the launch of its lower-cost Kinect-free Xbox One, priced at $399. That massive increase in June doesn't appear to have had a significant impact on total Xbox sales, which continue to lag far, far behind those of Sony's PlayStation consoles - but it does at least indicate growing interest in Microsoft's console, which the company could certainly use right now.

I'm going to say this like I always do. Microsoft f'd up big time with that launch price. Since the PS4 had a more successful launch, it affects sales as well down the road. People still have their eye on the PS4 and also hop on board because their friends and more people have it (obviously due to its successful launch). This is what MS gets for forcing you to pay $100 extra and get the kinect. You did this to yourselves MS! With that being said, I actually own a xbox one and really enjoy the kinect. It really is a cool little thing, but when everyone started hating on the price, the console should have been launched without a kinect as well.

I think it's the cheaper price point that got it. When you take a casual gamer, the 100 dollar difference would be huge. Probably a deciding factor for many.

Kixa PS4 been on top for months now the xbox one won't pass them for a long time.

I agree, they won't pass them within the next year, but Xbox will pass ps4 eventually

lol, in what life does that happen? PS3 passed 360 sales but it took a while because they got a year behind sales wise. With both console starting at relatively the same time this go around, including all the poor PR from microsoft and xbone only being out in several countries still, PS4 has been able to secure a large majority of console players and third part titles because of it's now larger player base.
Xbone isn't catching up and probably won't pass. Yes it's sales will grow and such but they got a rugged start. Sorry Xbone fanboy but unless Sony screws up, they've (Sony) got a pretty good hold on the console community and will probably blow away the the sales numbers of the xbone due to players having friends with the same consoles.

The only reason PS4 is outselling is because of the launch, price, etc. But The Xbox 1 was launched in different areas of the World, at different dates, where as the PS4 was launched on the same day across the globe. That is the primary reason it is being out sold.

EstablishedGaming You see, my friends were saying xbox one is better they're too foolish to know the difference in specifications.

one being better has nothing to do with selling how much.

Exactly. The consoles are about the same spec wise, one console was just $100 cheaper at the start which made all the difference.

Give it 2 years and the xbox will be leading in sales. It's the inevitable.

I don't think you understand the definition of the word "inevitable". You simply can't guess that Microsoft will lead in sales within the next 2 years. How could you possibly know? You don't, exactly. Only Microsoft fan boys continue to claim the XB1 is "better" than the PS4. Both consoles are new generation, both have their pros and cons. I have a PS4 and am getting an XB1 and actually preferred the XB360 to the PS3. My opinion though, PS4 is more fun than XB1. I much prefer the feel of the PS4 and the way it plays. The PS4 is out-selling the XB1 by at least 2:1 and I don't see that changing drastically, unless PS4 sales stop completely.

I have a ps4 and xbox one. I like the xbox one more. Look at the trend in Xbox sales when the price dropped. Even though they still dropped the price later and took a hit, sales still increased. If the trend continues, they will out-sell ps4. Same happened with 360 and ps3. Once more games for xbox are available in the future(MP based since xbox does that best) Sales will be even higher. Sony only has good singleplayer games and as the years continue they can't compete with multiplayer games like halo, gears, cod. Infact, this is why sony is going bankrupt.

I agree with the gaming aspect. Xbox has been renowned as the multiplayer king and most large gaming youtubers play xbox the majority of the time if not exclusively. This being said, many competitive gamers who get games just for the online capability will be leaning towards the Xbox One.

Why is it that they need to remind us about this every week?

DavidDo0M Sales do not determine the "better" console. Which is a better car, a Lambo Gallardo or a Ford Focus? The Lambo, you say? Then why has the Focus outsold the Lambo by a ratio much higher than 3:1? You think maybe price and availability factor in there? Most certainly. Microsoft has evened out the price discrepancy. Now, how will these number look in December? February? 2016? What most forget, overlook, or flat out ignore is the fact that PS4 is available in roughly 64 regions. X1 is only available in about 13. That's like bragging that your product is outselling mine, when your product is sold at Walmart and mine is only sold at a couple Mom and Pop stores. Let's wait until both consoles are available worldwide, give them time to sell, then compare the numbers.(as though numbers even matter)

In the meantime, don't base your decision on sales figures. That is moronic. Purchase the console that most appeals to you and your friends and be happy you could afford a new console at all. Ultimately, they are both fantastic consoles only separated by personal preference.

Right except the price discrepancy is no where near that gap. Also with a lambo you get more power with the higher price, unlike the XB1.

I knew Playstation was outselling Xbox but by 3:1 that part sort of surprised me...
But Ps4 was cheaper than Xbox One.
