Overkill Software will offer its bank robbery shooter Payday: The Heist for free via Steam on October 18, the developer has announced.

The game will be served up as part of a Payday 2 community drive; the free Payday reward was unlocked after the official Payday 2 Steam Community group hit 1.05 million people. The group stood at 1,108,594 members at the time of writing, unlocking a free mask.

The developer aims to acquire 1.5 million community members by October 18, the achievement of which will unlock "secret stuff", according to the promotional page.



Overkill Software and publisher 505 Games announced at E3 in June that Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is headed to PS4 and Xbox One.

The Crimewave Edition will include "enhanced features and a stash of new bonus content, giving fans the ultimate PAYDAY experience". No release date was specified.
