Microsoft shipped 1.1 million Xbox consoles in Q2 2014

Combined shipments of Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles hit around 1.1 million in the quarter ended June 30, Microsoft has announced.

This is up from the 1 million consoles it sold during the same period last year when only Xbox 360 was available, which has helped drive Xbox Platform revenue up $104 million or 14 per cent verses last year.

The firm has not, however, broken down what portion of that 1.1 million number accounts for Xbox One shipments, and has also not revealed how many of those console shipped were actually sold through to customers.

The company announced in April that 1.2 million Xbox One consoles had sold in its FYQ3, ended March 31. It later announced that more than 5 million Xbox One consoles had been shipped to retailers since the system launched in November, 3.9 million of those shipped by the end of 2013.

While not a direct comparison, since it remains unclear exactly how many Xbox One units have been sold to day, the 5 million shipped by April fell some 2 million short of the 7 million PlayStation 4 units Sony said it had sold through to consumers since its relative November release.

Microsoft said that 311,000 Xbox One units were sold in the US in the month of March.

In its full FY14 Q4 financial report released Tuesday, the firm announced that its Computing and Gaming Hardware revenue increased $274 million or 23 per cent, to $1.44 billion up from $1,17 billion, against the same period in 2013, driven by its Xbox console and Surface tablet product lines. Its Devices and Consumer Licensing division, which umbrellas Xbox, was up to almost $4.7 billion in the quarter, from $4.29 billion last year.

Microsoft announced last week that it will eliminate up to 18,000 positions throughout the next year as part of significant restructuring and cost cutting at the firm. Microsoft plans to pay out up to $800 million in severance and related benefits as a result of the layoffs.

CEO Satya Nadella explained the driving force behind the layoffs, which are the greatest in the company's 39-year history and will affect roughly seven per cent of its total staff. "The first step to building the right organization for our ambitions is to realign our workforce," he said.

Miss It's crazy to think I still see people buying the Xbox 360. I thought it would have died right when the One came out just like the original Xbox did when the 360 came out.

The 360 won't die until sometime in 2017 when they stop updating it and producing games for it.

yeah around then not many people will be on it

Potion_Jr_Jr Glad to hear about sales increase, but its sad to hear about the layoffs.I know a few people that got affected by this.

Most of them were due to Nokia acquisition. Companies always hedge jobs through layoffs after acquisitions.

Well I know alot where from that, But 2 of the people I know where laid off from the windows branch (the PC Windows) Which is quite sad, They laid off 175 people so far from the windows branch, some of them where even old time employees.
