Call of Duty Advanced Warfare being built on a ‘new engine’

4.4
With each new Call of Duty release comes an enhancement in visuals, and Advanced Warfare is set to be no exception.

According to the latest issue of GameInformer, Sledgehammer Co-founder Michael Condrey confirmed Advanced Warfare is “being built on a new engine”.

So what does this all mean? Previous Call of Duty titles have been developed on a heavily modified version of the id Tech 3 engine dating back to Call of Duty 2 all the way up to Call of Duty: Ghosts, more commonly known as the ‘IW Engine’.

Although each title has seen extensive enhancements in visual quality year on year, no Call of Duty title to this day has been developed on a “brand new” engine.

Based on the comment made by Condrey, we can only assume this is no longer the case and will instead move away from the id Tech/IW Engine to a completely new in-house engine.

With Call of Duty development now switching to a 3 year development cycle, it has given Sledgehammer Games the opportunity to essentially start from scratch. You’ll see evidence of the drastic improvements in the latest Advanced Warfare Reveal Trailer. If you rewind back to previous Call of Duty reveal trailers, you’ll notice they lack the smoothness and attention to detail as seen in the Advanced Warfare trailer.

We should expect to see more details surrounding the new engine in the months to come.

Cyimking Hmm... a new engine from scratch will take years to develop so I doubt they developed a new engine from scratch. Maybe it's a modified version of the regular ole' engine but modified for the next gen consoles instead of the current gen consoles (why are we still calling the xbox 360 / ps3 current anyways? Should it be called last-gen consoles now?)

Regardless, it doesn't matter what they say because companies will say anything to hype up the game (like every game). It comes down to the gameplay on the multiplayer. I personally will buy COD (like I always do) but if they have that purchase your gear at any level crap then im going back to BF.

They had 3 years to make this. Activision already filed copyright legislations for the game back in 2011/12. Sledgehammer also had no other game to work on for quite a while, they helped out with MW3 but not much so they had enough time to develop the new engine.
Sorry, but please research next.

Kevvooo i hope all you morons realize a new engine changes the whole game.... stop acting like its a tiny update that they make sound better than they are. The old COD engine was old as hell.

Yeah the new engine will completely revamp the game, hopefully the graphics are actually good.

I was foreseeing this to happen honestly. Sledgehammer wouldn't continue on the current IW engine and I saw this from the start. The only question is, how much "better" is it?

All the haters stay hating if this new engine is new and makes the game better then previous cods then don't be saying anything good about it

Carbonite They say this every year and the game still turns out crappy

I have a feeling that people will be surprised. I heard from some people that it will be made primarily for the xbox one, PS4, and PC and then ported over to the 360 and PS3. Means good things for "next-gen" and PC.

Maggardo Don't they tell us this every year? They say something along the lines of, it runs on a brand new engine. Then, we figure out that it's just the same engine as before.

Not really, they usually just do some updates to the current IW engine, while this one is running off a fresh, brand spanking new engine.

Hopefully it makes the game better than the past few versions.
