Ubisoft will continue to support PS3 and Xbox 360 for years to come

Ubisoft has reaffirmed its commitment to the PS3 and Xbox 360, lending credence to recent rumours that it will release a last-gen exclusive Assassin's Creed title.

Ubisoft vice president of creative Lionel Raynaud has told Edge that the publisher will continue to release software for the older consoles, and that its doing so will not compromise the quality of its next-gen titles.

"We will have games for PS3 and 360 for this year and probably the years after," Raynaud said.

"We want to be able to provide games to people who are playing on these consoles. Black Flag was the first Assassin's Creed game of this new generation but it was designed with that in mind, but I wouldn't say it was a cross-generation game, as it has features that could only be for this generation."

Following the company's official announcement of the next-gen only title Assassin's Creed: Unity, rumours emerged that another Assassin's Creed title will release exclusively for last-gen consoles.

Sources claim that Assassin's Creed Comet will release for Xbox 360 and PS3. The title will reportedly be set in North America and feature naval combat.

The rumour is consistent with reports that Ubisoft plans to release two Assassin's Creed games in 2014.

Despite the company's apparent plan to release separate titles across the two generations, Raynaud insists that releasing cross-gen titles does not lead to compromise.

"It's a choice - even when you do a game that has old-gen and new-gen versions, we decide which one is lead," he said.

"So if you decide that new gen is lead for all of your games, then you have no restrictions at all - you're just saying that the other generation will maybe not be able to have everything but still be a better game than we're used to having on this generation. We never made choices on Assassin's Creed or Watch Dogs where because we have this other generation we couldn't put something in the game. It would be a very bad call from a company and brand perspective."

Assassin's Creed: Unity will release 'holiday 2014' for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

It is still a massive market for them.

Miss I'm not surprised at this at all. I don't see why any company would just stop making titles for the PS3 and 360, they're still pretty good consoles and millions of people still play them.

Smart move on Ubisoft.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them smart but I think they're just stating the obvious. At the end of the day if they don't make a game someone else will, they need us (last and new gen players) just as much as we like them to continue publishing.

No players? No game. Until it stops being profitable for them they'll continue with whatever platforms they want.
