Microsoft has announced the departure of Marc Whitten, chief product officer of Xbox.

Having worked at Microsoft since 2000, Whitten leaves the company to take up the position of chief product officer of audio device firm Sonos.

During his 14-year tenure Whitten helped launch three Xbox consoles, and played a key role in the launch and growth of Xbox Live, which has grown to a user base of 48 million members since its launch in November 2002.

"I have had the extreme pleasure over the last 14 years to work on the greatest product with the greatest team and for the greatest community," commented Whitten in the announcement. "Xbox is so special because of the amazing team I've had the opportunity to work with and because our fans are the most incredible fans on the planet. It has been the highlight of my career to work on a product so loved. It's incredibly tough to leave but I am confident the best days are ahead for Xbox fans, in the capable hands of a very talented team."

Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer added, "I've had the pleasure of working with Marc for more than a decade and he has always led Xbox forward with a focus on our fans and delivering a platform that developers and creators can embrace to deliver incredible entertainment. We wish Marc well, while looking forward to the next chapter of Xbox."

No direct replacement was announced, however Whitten's team will report directly to Terry Myerson, executive vice president who "oversees the teams building the software platform and experiences for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox", until a replacement is found. "I look forward to working with Yusuf, Phil and the rest of the team to find a great replacement," commented Myerson.

"The remainder of the Xbox leadership team will remain intact," confirmed the announcement.

Dang that sucks to see him go, although I am sure he will be alright wherever he ends up.

Always unfortunate to see someone who's been with an outstanding company like Microsoft leave after such a long time. Wish him the best of luck with wherever he goes to next.

Big loss for the company.

There have been more than 2 people that have left Microsoft that were high up in the ranks.

This wont be a big deal. High ups transfer between companies all the time, for various reasons.
