Popcorn Time, Netflix for pirates, is closing

4.6
Popcorn Time was a multi-platform torrenting app that mimicked Netflix functionality via torrents. Users could stream movies through torrent files the same way a Netflix subscriber could simply load up Netflix and go. Despite their abrupt closing the service's creators are sticking to their guns that what they were doing was 100% legal. The closure was announced in the form of a message on their homepage detailing their history, accolades, and exact reasons for their shutdown.

Our experiment has put us at the doors of endless debates about piracy and copyright, legal threats and the shady machinery that makes us feel in danger for doing what we love. And that’s not a battle we want a place in.

We've shown that people will risk fines, lawsuits and whatever consequences that may come just to be able to watch a recent movie in slippers. Just to get the kind of experience they deserve.
Popcorn Time

Those who have previously installed the application are expected to retain access as the application isn't reliant on a central server from it's developer.

EstablishedGaming I heard apparently all torrent sites will soon forced to be closed by government issued warrants.

You do not deserve to use the internet.

LMAO ... Do you follow the pirate bay much? You can see how torrent sites react to threats or being told they have to close ... The f act is unless they know where the servers are they will just keep moving them, and torrent sharing doesn't rely on them havign the data anyway the seeders have the data, so there is nothing legally they can be implicated in for copyright violations directly.

Oasis Such a shame. When in reality all this service was doing was linking people to torrents, those torrents were already there, not their fault.
