Twitch Plays Pokemon rises to 75k concurrent viewership

4.5
Last week, a chat controlled version of Pokemon on the streaming service Twitch took the the internet by storm quickly garnering tens of thousands of viewers.

The twitch stream allowed anyone with a twitch account to control the game one key press at a time via chat. According to Twitch it has released that over 300,000 unique users have participated in this hectic playthrough of Pokemon.

The stream's creator has instituted a new brand new system for the game controlled by the masses, a democratic voting system. Instead of a single chat message being sent it would queue up votes for the game's next action.

Have you yourself got involved in this shenanigan? Have do you think about interactive streams such as this?

Third_Eye Didn't the save already reset once? What exactly are they going for?

HELIX

To beat the game, and I've been watching for three days now.

So much anarchy.

That's it? Trolls are all over it.

Watched this a few days ago and thought 'hmmm, I can think of so many games that would be brilliant like this', imagine 300,000 people playing a single game of street fighter or old nfs. Who doesn't want to see a week long race??

Scizor I'm loving this. So much fun and craziness going on. Did I mention that the Helix Religion (All hail Helix, our lord and savior) is going to pass Judaism as the 8th biggest religion in the world at this point?

The only bad part is the democracy system. It's really boring watch it like that, it's just a really slow playthrough with it on. Here's a super long quote regarding the majority fan's view on Democracy mode:

Look back two days ago, and forget that Democracy ever existed. What were the best parts of the run?
The ludicrous idea that badges were being earned and progress was being made.
The thrill of overcoming difficult obstacles.
The pain and poignancy of permanent mistakes, the comedy and absurdity of little deviations.
Now, with Democracy. What do we have?
A forced agenda.
Only slightly more challenge than playing the game single player.
A uniform slog through the game as intended.
I know many of you were frustrated with the Rocket HQ maze, but look back on how Anarchy made this stream what it is.
Abby K. Jay Leno. SS Ticket. ALMIGHTY HELIX. Pidgeot becoming a demigod. The ledge. Erika's bush.
NONE of these memes would have come about if Democracy was in place.
If the stream had started with Democracy, it would never have been as funny, exciting, tense, poignant, or downright compelling. TwitchPlaysPokemon started with a spark. That spark is now lost.

It's boring until democracy navigated the floor tiles and got the Lift Key, while anarchy used Whirlwind 3 times on Giovanni's 1 HP Kangaskhan.

The point of the whole thing isn't to win. The objective isn't to beat the game. It's an experiment. Get a ton of people together, and see what happens. Adding democracy is giving up and giving in. The Anarchy is the true meaning of what this is all about. I would rather be stuck in Team Rocket HQ for 5 months with amazing anarchy and hilarious shenanigans rather than take the easy way just so I can watch a boring slow paced playthrough.

Helix be with you.
