Next Call of Duty will be a “next-gen-first development,”

4.4
Sledgehammer Games is working on the next Call of Duty, and according to Activision’s Eric Hirshberg, the game will be developed primarily for next-gen consoles.

In an interview with IGN, Activision’s publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, shed some light on how Sledgehammer is handling the development of the next Call of Duty.

“Sledgehammer is approaching this as a next-gen-first development.

“Obviously in the console-transition year, anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the next-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process…. Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development,” he added.

This follows Activision-Blizzard’s latest financial report, during which they announced that the franchise will be handled by three studios going forward, Infinity Ward, Treyarch and now Sledgehammer.

The publisher also announced that each game will now be moved to a three-year development cycle, instead of the usual two-year cycle.

Hirshberg commented about that saying, “with the level of content we were putting in the games, it became a real horse race each and every time to get everything done that we wanted to get done, we’ve got more capabilities [with next-gen] than ever before to play with and we want to make sure our developers have the time to innovate, iterate, to bring the best creative vision and the most possible polish to each and every game.”

Do you expect this year’s Call of Duty to be better for it? Let us know your thoughts.

This is great, although we have never seen Sledgehammer make a Call of Duty before, only help in development.

Seems like an interesting game and I am curious in what the developers can make out of it due to Hirshberg stating that Next-Gen consoles allow for more capabilities.

I wouldn't expect them to make the next cod for around 360, when the new consoles have been out for a year.

Good, they need to go through with this.

No, it's going to be total trash, just like the last 3...

LOL you just suck at them. They're not youre basic video games. IW's side sucks, but Treyarch's are actually decent... You probably wouldn't know though LOL

I bet I could beat you on any COD you want, they games suck so hard now

Prime example of what ruins Call of Duty, **** talk, 1v1'ing kids. It ruined it. I play PC now, I will admit. Ghosts was nice but they tried way too hard on it.

Definitely agree here. Call of Duty really isn't that bad of a game when you look at what else is released. Granted, they've done little to advance the series since Black Ops 1.
The community is what makes it a terrible game for me; it's filled with abusive, pathetic people.

OT: I am glad to hear each game will have an increased development time. It should allow each studio to create far better games than what is currently being released each year.

Still not going to impress. I don't care if it's "future-gen", these games still progressively get worse with each release.

These Call Of Duty titles are cash cows requiring as little developmental effort as can be afforded. Ghosts had cutscenes copied frame from frame from an earlier title and a game that takes a year to develop is obviously not programmed and coded from the ground up. It's a copy and paste job and I personally cannot wait until this series dies a pathetic death.

Call of duty will eventually die, that's all I'm going to say, they already are.
