Xbox One and PS4 difference isn't "all that great", insists Microsoft

"There could be a lot of reasons" why Tomb Raider's frame rate varies between versions

Outspoken Microsoft senior director Albert Penello has chimed in once again on the Xbox One/PS4 specs debate, with particular reference to a recent upset about Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which reportedly doesn't run at 60 frames a second on Xbox One.

"Look, I had a lot of time to think about this and I believe in what I said," Penello told listeners during a new Gamer Tag Radio podcast, harvested by GamingBolt. Presumably, "what I said" is a reference to a chat with OXM about why comparing one console's specifications to another is basically "meaningless".

"I believe that the differences between the boxes are not all that great," Penello went on. "And I know what is going behind the scenes and I have access to more information about some of this than a lot of people. Sometimes people tend to neglect the points that are in my favour and they like to highlight the points that tell me I am wrong. I still think Ryse is still the best looking game on any platform. Period. End of story.

"I think if you look at the titles which we launched [with], which were multiplatform titles, the bulk of them were the same," he added. "I think there were 12 titles were released on both platforms, leaving three all of them had the same performance on both boxes. Everybody wants to focus on frame rate [with] Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and OK, there could be a lot of reasons why that could be true.

"But we are just a [few] weeks in, we just shipped, it's a long generation. People who bought an Xbox One are going to be in for an awesome generation of games that are only going to get better. I think these little things get way overblown versus the quality of the games and the real differences in experiences which are pretty minor."

Microsoft has suggested that Xbox One's specs are about "agility and brains" not "brute force" - it's all about serving up a stable platform for developers to work with, apparently, while setting aside resources for app developers.

-CP Xbox ONE software is superior to the PS4's, and PS4 hardware is superior to the Xbox ONE's. Simple as that.

Yes. I suppose your opinion is as simple as that.

Not an opinion, it's the truth. The PS4 has better hardware to play games at higher resolutions with greater details, even though it costs less. The Xbox ONE has better software that can handle multitasking and online play much easier than the PS4 can. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

I like where you are coming from but you are wrong..both consoles can run games at the same specs as each other. It depends on the game/developer. The consoles themselves can do it. The developers are the ones that choose how to make the game run.

You are completely wrong . In fact, you are, by far, the most wrong any one person could be on this subject. Try doing some basic research and you will see that I am 100% correct. Stop making yourself look like an idiot. Sure, a developer could possibly make a game run the same on both consoles, but the PS4's hardware makes it capable of running at the same FPS with better detailing. The Xbox ONE can run the game, while also running other apps at once, watch TV, Netflix, etc. They are different consoles, with different operating systems, networks, etc. I own both, so I am not putting either down. I like them both the same, but for different reasons.

But saying the Xbox can't do it is wrong. It is possible, all depends on developer. The console itself HAS the power to do it. Games on the Xbox can run smoothly and at 1080p, and so can the PS4. It depends on the games, the developer, and if your TV is even 1080p.

People need to stop blaming it on the developer, there is 50% power difference (42 if the rumor ends up being true). Do you really believe a dev would say "oh let's lower the resolution just because" the XB1 cant handle it. ALL multiplat run better on PS4, the only 1080p games on XB1 are Forza and arcade games, none that are graphically intensive.

The PS4 is more powerful don't be blind.

TeleTuppy i think Microsoft and sony should just team up and build the ultimate console and share all their profits that way everybody could game together and there wouldn't be an argument over which console is better

I actually agree with you on this one. But we both know this would never happen. They would argue on so many things and they wouldn't be able to get the console built.

You need to understand that this would be AWFUL for the consumer. The companies would have no major competition (Nintendo consoles are not selling well), due to them being a monopoly they can charge whatever they please.
Basic economics.

This would be freaking awesome. But they'd be splitting the money they made and nobody wants that.

The_Hundreds I love console wars

Although I thought Microsoft was the champion in the 360 vs PS3

PS4 is the winner against the Xbox One

Soo many twists and turns, but Its gone from Microsoft being the best to a complete roll switch!
