New Alienware Steam Machines will be released annually

4.4
Alienware will release a new Steam Machine on an annual basis, a company exec has revealed.

"Lifecycle wise, consoles update every five, six, seven years, we will be updating our Steam Machines every year," Alienware's GM Frank Azor told TrustedReviews.

He went on to explain that annual updates will be necessary due to its Steam Machine's complete lack of upgradeability.

"There will be no customisation options, you can't really update it," he said of the Alienware Steam Machine, which was revealed alongside 12 others at a recent Steam Machine event.

"The platform will continue to evolve as the games become more resource intensive," added Azor.

Alienware typically offers a number of out-the-box options for its gaming PCs, and its slimline Steam Machine will be no different.

"There will be some configuration options when you purchase it, maybe you can get a faster CPU, maybe some more memory something like that," said Azor.

He went on to suggest that those interested in making internal upgrades themselves would be better off with a regular PC, onto which you can install SteamOS for free for Steam Machine functionality.

"If you actually want to customise your Alienware Steam Machine, maybe change your graphics card out or put in a new CPU, you would be better off with the standard Alienware X51," he said.

Alienware's first Steam Machine is expected to launch in September.

Oasis Such a pointless idea. If you want to PC game then at least have the knowledge to actually build a machine yourself...for much cheaper!

I hate it when people say this. It is supposed to bridge the gap between consoles on PC. Most people only buy consoles because they think PC building, gaming, etc is too complicated. With Steam Machines it is basically a console.

Finally, someone who understands, that's what these are meant for.

I, and many others, completely understand the goal of a product like this.
What you, and a few others don't understand is that becoming successful in this area of home gaming isn't a simple as sticking a 'Valve approved' sticker on a few machines and calling them 'Steam consoles'.

But maybe I'm wrong, maybe a product like this will take over the front room, maybe it's exactly what the uninformed have been waiting to buy.

Not sure about AW prices but a Steam Machine will range from $500 - $6k depending on what and who you buy from.

So why waste money on a Steam machine that's pretending to be a console when you could spend a lot less on an actual console or better buy a gaming pc.
The way I see it is like this, the fact that Alienware have admitted that every year you'll basically need to buy a new machine from them (if you want the lastest they offer) it's a joke. It's an insult to those as you described as wanting to bridge the gap between consoles and pc's. It's a gimmick.

Example, if you bought just two Alienware 'machines' each year for two years at the end of it you could of spent that money on a beastly gaming rig that would last much longer and still out perform these toys.

I totally agree whit you because it would be better just buying a gamling pc so you also would be abel to do other stuff
