Microsoft explored 75 Xbox One prototypes

4.6
Microsoft's senior industrial design manager Carl Ledbetter revealed that the company examined more than 75 sketched and 3D-printed prototype Xbox One designs before settling on the console's final look.

The Xbox One's Kinect sensor additionally saw more than 100 drafted designs before Microsoft decided on a physical shape for the console's camera peripheral. The Xbox One's controller was even more painstakingly crafted, requiring designers to draft more than 200 potential gamepad designs during development.

"We were extremely thorough," Ledbetter said, speaking for a Microsoft-published profile feature. "We were trying to push boundaries, to do something new and inventive, but there was so much at stake that we had to be really careful as well. The reason why there was so much at stake is that people really, really care about Xbox."

I wonder what the other prototypes looked like..

Looped IMO, they should have kept trying. I think they just ran out of time...

i doubt that. they had enough time to make 75 prototypes which is a fair lot. You also need to take the financial aspect of this into account.

Dorkus That's crazy how they invested $100 million in the controller alone.

Even though I know it's true, I still can't believe they did that since they changed so little with the controller

POsts like this piss me off. What else would you add to a controller? Some useless touch pad that you rarely use. A fabulous blue light you can't even turn off? The Xbox One controller is perfect in my eyes. I don't see how they could've made it any better. Maybe if they lowered the home button a bit but that's barely an issue.

They have had a very long time, they have just been preoccupied with other games and exclusives I guess :/

Not surprising, they put a lot of work into it

PKA I didn't know this, I thought this console was designed by a 6 year old. It looks like another box with a controller. Glad some thought actually went into this.

Hahahaha I know right? it seems like no though was put into the next gen console

DucksRUs281 The changes in the controller aren't extremely apparent, but I'm glad they didn't change it much. I enjoy using the Xbox 360 controller, besides the battery pack sticking out. Glad they fixed that problem.

I agree, I'd always hit my battery pack and it would fall out LoL.

I personally like the look of the Xbone way better than the PS4.
