Sony patent covers adding new content to classic cloud based games

4.4
Newly published patent may hint at the company's plans for Gaikai

A newly published Sony patent reveals that the company has considered the possibility of introducing methods to add new content to classic games streamed via the cloud.

Filed last year and published this week (via NeoGAF), the patent in question is entitled 'Suspending State of Cloud-Based Legacy Applications'. It reads:

"Among other things, this application describes a method and apparatus for emulating a video game that includes generating snapshots that can be used for incorporating new content into the emulated video games."

Sony says that offering new ways to play pre-existing games can increase the longevity of said titles.

"Instead of replaying the same level or completing the same missions repeatedly, gamers often desire new challenges when replaying legacy games. In response to this need, game designers have begun to produce mini-games.

"Within a mini-game, the gamer can be instructed to complete new objectives or challenge their friends for high scores in a format that was not originally designed into the legacy game.

"Further, since the mini-game is derived from a legacy game, the gamer already knows the characters and basic components of the game, and is therefore more likely to play the mini-game."

The patent goes on to describe how developers would go about adding new content to their games:

A section [0017] In order to create mini-games without reverse engineering and recoding a game designer may rely on the use of triggers and snapshots to provide information needed for the mini-games without having to dig into the code of the legacy game. Triggers are further described in commonly assigned co-pending application Ser. No. 61/666,628 (Attorney Docket Number SCEA12004US00) filed the same day as the present application and entitled "DETERMINING TRIGGERS FOR CLOUD-BASED EMULATED GAMES".

The mini-games may be made by providing an emulator with game inputs that bring the emulated game to a certain point where the mini-game will begin. A snapshot may be generated according to aspects of the present disclosure and that point may be used as the used as the starting point in the future mini-game. Thereafter, triggers may be generated in order to provide new experiences for the game. Game designers may then develop a script and combine it with the snapshot and triggers to produce the mini-game. Therefore, in order to design mini-games in this manner, there is a need in the art for a method of quickly generating snapshots.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that cloud gaming network Gaikai will launch in North America this year, ahead of an expected European release in 2015. A number of PS3 games will be available to play on PS4 via Gaikai.

Sounds like a way of doing some minor tweeking to a game and then selling for far more than is resonable.

3. Sony had online service on the ps2 again
4. Businesses copy each other all the time, look at the computer your using, stop being a hopeless fan boy and understand the principle of business
5. Should I continue?

I think Dreamcast had the 1st online gaming before PS2,so did Gamecube... not even sure PS2 was actually online in Europe,i certainly don't think it was in the UK,you could even play Quake 3 against PC users on Dreamcast :)

Also, it's not just Sony copying Microsoft. I bought a sweater and shoes for Christmas. The guy across the street did the same. He's such a freaking copy-cat.

Stop being ignorant jeez. There is no need to fight over silly things. I love my xbox. Would I get a ps? No, I love my xbox. But I still respect both consoles.

Like I stated earlier how am I a fanboy? I was just giving out facts. No one even knows what consoles I own or play , Nor did i ever state which company is better, Nor did i ever say companies shouldn't copy. Never did i once say that. I was just showing someguy that sony has copied. All companies do. Next i never said a console that supports 4 controllers... I stated "A console that supports 4 controllers wired and wireless, supports internal storage, and supports lan connectivity." So next time use the whole sentence not just pieces you want out of it. Yes the ps2 had an Online service but not many people used it, it was more neglected than it was used, and it was not available to all models of the playstation 2 as some needed adapters. Also PS2 Online as it was called was not a Sony based service, instead each game had its own servers that had to be maintained by the publisher and developer of the game. Notice how i stated earlier "Sony Released an online service(2006)". The ps2 online was not a service provided by sony it was quote "online multiplayer on the PS2 is the responsibility of the game publisher and is run on third-party servers. Most recent PS2 online games have been developed to exclusively support broadband internet access".
Next, never did i state that sony did not create an eye toy. I did not metion it because first off i was stating what sony copied, next Above i was mentioning a camera that is utilizing voice commands. The EyeToy was classified as a "Gaming Webcam" as it was more utilizing video features than it was voice. it was a good device at the type but it became less used than any other console camera out their to date, as it only supported 26 games (Full intergration and required to have to play the game), and about another 20 more (features, not full intergration) . Just pointing that out. So please don't call me a fanboy especially since you dont know what I play or own...

This is a nice little feature they are adding! Mini Games! And, I hope in these Mini games, they add trophies, because I absolutely love to achieve trophies and achievements!
