PS4 sales to hit 38 million by 2017, analyst forecasts

Worldwide PS4 sales will reach 37.7 million units by the end of 2016, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has forecast.

During the same period, Pachter expects Xbox One sales to total 29 million units.

The analyst said in a research note sent to investors on Thursday: "We expect Sony's and Microsoft's new consoles to thrive over the next three years, with cumulative worldwide sales of 37.7 million PS4 and 29 million Xbox One consoles by year-end 2016. We do not expect Nintendo's Wii U to fare as well, with cumulative sales of under 20 million by 2016."

In November, IHS head of games research Piers Harding-Rolls forecast that PS4 sales will comfortably outpace Xbox One sales over the next four years. The analyst anticipates 49 million PS4 sales by the end of 2017, compared to 38 million Xbox One sales.

Harding-Rolls said: "IHS believes that Sony's wider geographical brand allegiance - especially across continental Europe and Japan - will be decisive in allowing PS4 to outsell Xbox One on a global basis by the end of 2017."

PS4 launched on November 15, 2013 and Xbox One on November 22. Sony reported 2.1 million PS4 sales on December 3, while Microsoft reported two million Xbox One sales on December 11.

Having launched in November 2012, global Wii U sales totalled 3.91 million units as of September 30, 2013.

It is quite early to predict that figure, still 3 years until 2017, could be more, could be less.

-CP That is a lot consoles in 5 years!

It is a fair lot when you think of it. I'm sure that Sony and Microsoft would of made a fair lot of money off these

A fair lot? They will have generated hundreds of millions, if not breaking one billion, already in sales.

Plug that is alottt of consoles! wow think of all the money they have made too

I'm pretty sure these are the current gross of the PS4 and the Xbox One as of this week
Xbox One: 2.5m consoles @ $500 = $1,250,000,000 (1.25b)
PS4: 3.4m consoles @ $400 = $1,360,000,000 (1.36b)

Those are sales I have calculated, I am pretty sure they are correct. (I rounded the money up to $400 and $500 for less confusion)

Well good luck with that, I feel the sales will probably decline soon. Although it is $100 cheaper.

Zinx Wow. This is a lot of consoles. I can't believe this!

Well seeming that the PS2 sold 150 million consoles in its lifetime it's not a huge amount.

codmodshop PS4 over xbox one? No. I think a lot of other factors have to go in this. ALOT of xbox 360 users aren't willing to pay 500$ when the price goes down to 400$ then a lot more people will buy it. When the next call of duty comes out or fifa or anygame that people want and it only comes out for xbox one then everyone will get xbox one.

People who think Activision would make call of duty just for xbox pshh

COD and FIFA are multiplat, and no one buys a console for those games. Sony has the history of great exclusives throughout the life of their console. The 360 came out strong but had little exclusives in the last 3 years.
