DayZ alpha sells over 400,000 on Steam

Over 400,000 copies of the standalone version of DayZ were purchased on Steam, developer Bohemia Interactive has revealed.

Although the game has not yet been officially released, an alpha version of Dean Hall's Arma 2 mod turned standalone title is available through Steam Early Access.

Posting on the official DayZ tumblr, Bohemia reported the game's first week performance, stating that "over 400.000 survivors have entered Chernarus" and "over 40.000 concurrent users pushed DayZ Alpha servers to their limits".

The DayZ alpha has achieved this success in spite of widespread reports of character wipes and other issues, all symptoms of its status as work-in-progress.

DayZ Early Access is available on Steam for £19.99, however, its developer has advised caution when purchasing: "[DayZ] Early Access is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them," it says.

"It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle."

Bohemia has said it doesn't expect the title to reach beta version with all key features present for more than another year. Meanwhile, alpha players have been told to expect "serious issues and possible interruptions of game functioning".
