DayZ hits Steam Early Access right in the head

4.5
The zombies are finally here! Hooray! DayZ is now available for PC on Steam Early Access for $30. As always, those who buy the early version will get the final build when it launches – and developer Bohemia Interactive is certain to note that the current release is truly an unfinished version of the game:

"DayZ Early Access is your chance to experience DayZ as it evolves throughout its development process. Be aware that our Early Access offer is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them. It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle."

This echoes the sentiment from DayZ creator Dean Hall earlier this month, when he cautioned potential players that the Early Access version would be "barebones." Still, YouTubers are encouraged to show the world what DayZ's bones look like, Hall says on Twitter.

DayZ hit Early Access with a launch trailer, but that was pulled from Steam for being too graphic.

daRealRush I heard this game is kinda boring, so I most likely won't be getting it!

-Mark I am thinking about getting this game once I get my build all put together. Although, the first game I will get is definitely BF4. I was also thinking about getting Rust.

Rust is ok. I'll suggest getting DayZ. It will be fun when its fully released and out of Alpha.

Yeah dude get dayz well it is cheap because it will probably raise in price..

I bought this game and its great but its kinda boring if you spawn in Balota and get all the loot. When the update goes up with cars BUY IT THEN. Also it runs pretty good on my friends computer who gets around 20 on the old dayz but now gets around 25 to 30. I have a 660 ti and i get around 50 to 60 frames.

Coming from someone who easily gets 60 frames on ultras for BF4/Planetside/Crysis, I felt the DayZ standalone is not very well optimized at the moment. I turned many settings significantly down with silly things like V-sync and motion blur off. Yet my PC was still chugging fairly often and I couldn't keep more than 35 frames in some areas. Friends with similar and/or slightly more powerful rigs also reported to me that they were experiencing similar issues. I should look more into it but just so you know it's there.

As for "little bugs" I've already come across a fair share in the 3 hours or so I sunk into it yesterday. Zombies melting into walls, stairs eating your feet and not letting you up them, and door frames felt like they got shorter on the way out.

That being said, the new inventory system is quite welcome (very Resident Evil-y) and default control scheme isn't as terrible as the original DayZ mod (though I still highly suggest changing your key binds)
