Lower Call of Duty: Ghosts sales 'not a sign of series fatigue'

Call of Duty: Ghosts didn’t fare too well at review, but Activison feels that its biggest and most trusted critics are the fans themselves who, according to Eric Hirshberg, are getting along with the new shooter just fine.

Speaking among the pages of this month’s GameInformer, Activision’s head of publishing was asked if the Call of Duty brand was in danger of perishing under gamer fatigue.

He replied, “No,” and added, “We’ve been pretty transparent all year that we think, because of the challenges of the console transition year, that that was likely in the short-term. I think it would be a mistake to conflate the challenges of the console transition year with any indications about the health of the franchise.”

The magazine then asked Hirsberg if annualising the brand has perhaps caused diminishing returns to this pointm and it was suggested that this is a popular view among critics. He replied, “Well no, obviously not – and obviously I don’t agree with the critics there. I know that Call of Duty’s a polarising franchise with some of the critics, and it’s clear to me that not all the critics like our strategy of making a game every year, but thankfully our fans do.

“It’s also clear to me that the critical response doesn’t always mirror the fans’ appreciation of a game. We actually do read the critics’ comments and take them into consideration during our creative process, but we just can’t measure ourselves by that yardstick alone.

“Our most important audience is our fans, so we try to stay laser-focused on making games that they love. If you look at the fact that [Ghosts is] the most pre-ordered game of the year, it’s the most pre-ordered next-gen game of the year, it’s already the number one most played on Xbox Live, and that we’re seeing longer average playtimes than ever before, we’re confident that we’re doing well by the criteria that matter most.”

Is the Call of Duty brand dwindling? How much longer can it keep up this pace? Let us know below.

Cod 4 and waw, were the best games for Call of Duty. Everything since has been a recycled idea from either the previous game or another game. Yes the sales are indeed a showing of how the series has lost interest in the world.

xmioinster cod ghosts is honestly garbage compared to every other cod. i love how so many people though keep ***** about how cod4 and mw2 are the best. cod 4 came out in 2007 and mw2 in 2009. why does everyone keep mentioning it like it's gonna make a difference?

Because CoD4 was the best Call of Duty? So why not say it? Ghosts is a good Call of Duty honestly, I haven't had a problem with Ghosts like I did with MW2, MW3, and BO2. Ghosts in my opinion (aside from the features they took away, theatre, etc) is a step up for Call of Duty, online has given me 1 Problem. Which is server connectivity. Other than that, it is good.

I believe that CoD: Ghosts is an unfinished game because theres way too many problems on it. instead of them announcing the release date for CoDs why cant they just make sure the game is completely made before having too many problems and then multiple TU updates. so fare MW2 its been the best CoD in my opinion.

COD 4 and MW2 is the best cod's. Mw2 is the best sequel to a game ever made. From missions to online they are the 2 that made the "new gen" cod series and I say new gen not as xbox 3 or ps4 but whatever cods are made after that. They are what you can say true og games and anyone like me that has played them from they day they came out but still can go on there after all the years they both have been out and laugh or like the mods or use a crappy gun but kill everyone and win is a true og also. They graphics keep getting worse and they are out of good ideas they maxed out on them 2 games and they try to make it better but there is a limit to everything. You should not beable to make your own emblem it just gets over used and abused or most people dont even make one. No stupid call in dog streaks or anything as such they only reason I get the new cods from 3rd party screw whole same anymore is to mod em. But thats me.

"-about the health of the franchise.

LMFAO
Fix the health of in-game players so we don't die in one shot then you can talk about how awful your game really is.

Lets be honest, Call of Duty started dying after MW2, every time they get more bland, i remember when Cod 4 came out, people would play that for more than 1 year, and yet with the latest ones you just ditch the last one in hope that the newest one is more fun, but its not really.

They can say it isn't series fatigue all they want to but, I think that is really the problem.

Chuck_Bartowski At least Ghosts wasn't as terrible as Black Ops 2.

Black ops 2 was the best game in the series I don't know what you're talking about

I personally think MW2 or World At War are the best games in the series.
