Early PS4 adopters are reporting hardware failure & console locks

4.7
The PlayStation 4 is upon us! With that being said, early reports from customers who managed to obtain Sony's latest console early have already been rolling in reporting hardware failure.

The first report came in from NEOGaf users "Dylx," who claimed simply updating the console caused the light bar to turn white while subsequently "bricking" the console:

After playing a brief game of NBA 2k14 I quit and inserted my battlefield 4 disk. The system prompted for an update, so while watching the progress bar (Around 20%) my controller light turned from blue to white. Hasn't worked since...

Get those extended warranties ready! and SCEA on speed dial!

users from other areas of the internet have also popped up having similar problems. Reddit user "Arogon" has expressed the same type of issues with his Taco Bell supplied unit

If that wasn't bad enough, another Reddit user by the name of "YearsofLove" also reported a similar issue from his Taco Bell supplied PlayStation

Now clearly these are pre-launch consoles that could potentially suffer from a lack of proper software updates. It could also just simply be bad luck as all hardware does yield some form of failure rate. That being said, it's still a grim look into the negative's surrounding new hardware launch, negatives that more users will undoubtably experience in the coming weeks.

This isn't an unknown problem. Updates having been bricking Playstation consoles since the PS3.

Echleon I watch the stream from last night. he allegedly turned off his PS4 during a update and i won't turn back on.

Surely the console wouldn't let you turn off during an update, unless they pulled the plug??

Pashtun How is this a hardware failure? It came from an update so isn't it a software problem? This can be easily fixed with a patch. Best thing to do when you get your PS4 is to not update it until they fix this.

There isn't just software problems, there is other reports too, Kotaku had a broken HDMI slot on their console they got for reviewing, there's also HDD problems, IGN also received a broken PS4.

If Sony knew about it then maybe they have a plan, if this is the first time they've heard it then....whoops, better start registering those warranties asap.
