'Everyone Is Using 100 Percent Of Xbox One' Says Forza's Director

4.5
Dan Greenawalt, creative director on Xbox One launch title Forza 5, says 'everyone' is 'using 100 percent of the box'.

Talking to X-ONE magazine in an interview that will appear in a forthcoming issue of the magazine, Greenawalt was pressed on whether Forza 5 will run at 1080p and 60fps native.

"Even in an F1 car, going 220mph around Spa with 16 other F1 cars on the track," he replied.

He then responded to why other developers - such as Crytek with Ryse: Son Of Rome and Infinity Ward with Call Of Duty: Ghosts - are slower to reach that same benchmark.

"I can’t speak for other titles, but what I can say is that we have a bespoke engine that’s designed for the Xbox One. We started before we even shipped Forza 4, so we’ve been working on this.

"And to me, I’ve been working on Forza for ten years now and the reason I like it is that Forza’s always a challenge, we push innovation and it’s not always just make it shinier. It’s cloud powered AI, 16-player multiplayer, dedicated servers, curated liveries. There’s just a lot of innovation there.

"We started three years ago thinking this is the architecture Microsoft is designing and we were talking to it about what we wanted the next gen to be about, like materials - orange peel paint, some of the rubbing on the tyre, the many interactions that make the car look real. So the Xbox One was designed to be able to do this, but you also have to work on your engine to make sure it’s doing it as well and we’ve had the time to really do that and really optimise our engine.

"But the truth is that I get asked are we using 100 per cent of the box? Of course we are. Everyone is. Even people who are upscaling are still using 100 per cent of the box. What happens over the course of years is that we get better at tricking the box into doing what we want. It’s optimisation.

"We had more time so we’re very well optimised and we will continue to optimise this game. If you think about Forza 2, it was a well optimised game, but Forza 4 looked a lot better than Forza 2. That just comes with time."

boolad137 I thought the xbox one could only run on 720p. Wasn't there a whole debate about it.

Xbox is not limited to 720p, only the game was.
The console can reach up to 2160p (4k gaming) where as PS4 can't
Devs just need to optimize the game to fit more code into the console.

anything can run something in 4k, it would just be 2 fps on a console lol

No, PS4 can't run games @ 4K but your statement is true. Unless you are running supermario lol

both ps4 and the one do 4k for media only if xbox cant even hit 1080 on ghosts we will never see 4k sony has just admitted that it will only do 4k for videos microsoft just dosent want to stand up and admit we will never see 4k this gen.

Actually, Xbox One could easily play Ghosts at 1080p/60fps. Infinity Ward merely did not have time to optimize for eSRAM. Nothing more. The console is quite capable. Forza 5, NBA 2k14, NBA Live'14, Kinect Sports Rivals and a number of other first and third party games run native 1080p/60fps. Please, research a legitimate source before claiming the console "can't do something."

So, do you wanna explain what eSRAM is and why the console has to be optimized for it?

The point is to fully use it, so yeah.

Brandownage27 If that's 100% of what he Xbox one can do, that's laughable, and yet another bad move on Microsoft's part. I'm being realistic by saying that, believe me, it's a beautiful looking game. It's very realistic, but the fact of the matter is, by saying that this is 100% of the what it can do, they've totally spoiled the rest of the games to come. People are going to want to see bigger and better beyond the launch games. Microsoft...Why, why, why... It's like you're wanting people to go to the PS4.

They're hedging all their bets on the cloud being their savour which is laughable to say the least.

100% of the Xbox One, yes, but with the existing engines so far. Call of Duty is based off of the engine they used for Modern Warfare, just updated every so often. Forza achieved their great graphics due to them actually working on it from the beginning. Most game developers (I presume) are just taking existing game engines and just updating them for the Xbox One. Maybe if developers were to create all new engines (even though this takes a huge amount of time!) then they would probably be able to do a lot more than they have just now with the power of the Xbox One. Its not all about the hardware, its also the software behind it all!

Lazy developers who use last gen engines, merely tweak them for nextgen, and claim it uses 100% CPU should be told by MS to stop spreading propaganda and MS should C&D them.

A number of other first party games like Ryse at 900p, Titanfall at 720p, Killer Instinct at 720p, Dead Rising 3 720p 30 fps.

Hell, multiple sources claiming that even Assassins Creed is below 1080p on Xbox One.

Upscaling is a nice way to cover their weak hardware, but it will never look close to as good as native 1080p. Not to mention that this is only the beginning of the generation, the PS4 games will only get BETTER looking.
