Windows 8.1 available to download now

4.3
The promised launch of Windows 8.1 is upon us. Microsoft should be turning on their servers right now to allow PC users worldwide that have Windows 8 installed to download the free update to its latest OS with tons of new features and improvements. You can check out our own assessment of Windows 8.1 in our review that we posted on Wednesday.

Some users are also reporting that the "GA Rollup A" update -which leaked almost a week ago for the x64 version of 8.1- is also now available via Windows Update, so it's likely this is also now being released along with the Core App updates and Windows Store update of 8.1 for Windows 8.

If you do not have Windows 8 installed on your PC (and there's a good chance you don't), you can still update to Windows 8.1 for a fee. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 owners can go to the Windows.com website and download either the Windows 8.1 update for $119.99 or Windows 8.1 Pro for $199.99. However, as we have mentioned before, there is a little workaround that should save people with older Windows operating systems some money if they want to put in some extra effort.

You can find the upgrade in the store of by putting in "ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade]ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade" and hitting enter on your browser.

Monster-Munch So is windows 8.1 better then windows 8.0?

Definitely. And I don't know why people are talking about touchscreen monitors. Your TV isn't touchscreen and your Xbox has the same UI and your future Xbone will have the same UI as well.

-Hardwell Great :/ they should just get rid of windows 8 nobody even likes it :/

"No one" keep that to yourself, people do like it. People who have touchscreen monitors enjoy it. I'm upgrading to it i guess.

Skip 8 and just go straight to 8.1

I updated to it from Windows 8 and used the activator that is out now for those who don't want to pay for your OS. I gotta say wait until KMSpico releases his activator. I had to spend an entire night getting my PC back down to Windows 8 and placing files back where they belong. Also, nothing really new in 8.1 other than the "Start Button" being brought back and new GUI's for apps such as "Store" "Xbox Music" and "Mail"

Falsified Might go and download it now. Anyone who has it; is it good?

If you are using your PC for gaming or trying to do anything efficient on it, I wouldn't download it.

Unless of course you have a touch screen monitor or device considering that is what it was optimized for.

I got it. And I love it. Anybody that says Windows 8 sucks haven't tried it and are just sheep.

Actually, It came with my brand new HP laptop, and I absolutely hated it! I think it is possibly, the worst Computer OS ever!

Not true. Tried it as soon as it came out for a good 5 days on an open partition and absolutely hated it. I hate the Metro UI and I hate ribbons, ergo Windows 8 is garbage in my opinion. Glad you like it yourself though.

I also agree, I enjoy Windows 7 much more.

Honestly I'm not a big fan of the UI but I love the performance of it. And in 8.1 you can boot straight to desktop and skip all that metro UI nonsense.
