GTA Online release times, unlocks tied to Rep Points

Grand Theft Auto Online opens in a few hours, so Rockstar has detailed some of the multiplayer suite’s features including an assurance that players can’t simply by their way to to an advantage.

As confirmed last week, players will be able to spend real-world money to buy in-game currency, or GTA$. You need this cash – earned in single- and multiplayer through mission progress, optional objectives, and the stock market – to buy weapons and upgrades. In a Rockstar Newswire post, the publisher said this won’t unbalance the game.

“The option of purchasable GTA$ should not disrupt the playing field – and there are a few mechanics in place to help ensure that. All players still have to rank up with Reputation Points (RP) in order to get access to purchase high-end items,” Rockstar wrote.

“No one can begin GTA Online and simply spend a lot of money out of the gate to get a leg up. You will have to earn your stripes and play to unlock access to the aspirational clothes, guns and other items. Please also remember that in GTA Online, hustling to afford the finer things by earning GTA$ doing robberies, stick-ups, winning races and other profitable activities is a fun gameplay experience rather than ever being a ‘grind’.”

Rockstar also said it will keep an eye on balance and tweak if necessary.

Addressing another common concern, Rockstar said players invited into another’s property will not be able to “shoot up their place or steal their cars from their garage”. If you and another player own the same piece of property, you will each be able to enter your own personal instance of that property at any given time, and can enter other player’s instance via invite, so multiple instances are fine.

The events of GTA Online take place in the months preceding the story of GTA 5. Once it unlocks today, you’ll be able to play just by selecting the bottom slot on your character wheel. The exact time of the unlock is unknown as it depends on a title update.

When creating a character, players choose gender, parents, genetic history and lifestyle variables to generate stats and appearance. once you start playing you can access manual character customisation options by purchasing clothes, haircuts and accessories.

Rockstar said it intends to add new content to GTA Online soon, including the ability for players to generate jobs and share them. The Content Creator tool is due during northern autumn.

Grand Theft Auto Online will go live on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network at 4am Pacific / 7am Eastern / 12pm Greenwich Mean Time / 9pm Eastern Australian time on October 1, Rockstar Games has confirmed to IGN.

The GTA 5 multiplayer add-on will come in the form of a Title Update on both platforms. Anyone who owns GTA 5 will be accessible via the game menu once the multiplayer game rolls out.

Lgnd Everyone stop complaining it's a new server just like when CoD games come out and other games it has bugs because so many people are on it at once.

I don't think I have ever seen a CoD server mess up on release day because of people being on it. Either not as many people are trying to get on it like they did with GTA V or I'm missing it because I normally play campaign for a little before hoping on multiplayer.

daRealRush What I am hearing about the online is bad...But I haven't had any problems, so far. Hope, they fix everything in a bug fix update, here real soon!

I hope they update it soon aswell, all of my friends are playing excluding me :(

I think everyone is having the problem with it. A few of my friends said when they try to race, it stays on a loading screen or mentions something about a cloud sever not being available.

Aruss94 honestly this is ********. u delay the game to september, then u even have the balls to delay the online experiance. and it still not even working properly.

They delayed it for good reasons in my opinion.

NO ONE can expect the online servers to be amazing on the release of it. They will always have it's lag as so many people are connecting to them at one time. Don't be so impatient and ignorant about it, they're most likely doing the best they can to sort it ASAP.

VEVO It's buggy as hell. The first mission you do. A race. My guy doesn't get in the car. The car disappears and I end up in a moshpit of people. I left and rejoined and I'm stuck at a blurry screen doing nothing. My friend is having issues being TPd around the map at random and also the time of day changing. This is REALLY buggy. This better be server related issues.

I didn't expect it to be this bad, :( Hope they can fix this like NOW, thanks for information dude.

It's a good thing I was up early this morning. I got on and got the update around 5:30 AM. It was pretty good at the time. Then the traffic of people was very low since everyone was waiting until 7:00 to get on, but a little after 7:00 is when it started getting rough. Not to bad though, for me at least.

Axe The servers for online are pretty slow and overloading, but I mean, what can you expect.

I have patients though.

That's what I've been hearing, I haven't been on to test it yet, but today after school I will. :) Hopefully the problem gets fixed.
