Nintendo exec 'many people still don't know Wii U is a new console'

Nintendo UK marketing director Shelly Pearce has said too many consumers are still not aware that Wii U is a new console.

In May, it emerged that Nintendo was sending messages to Wii owners via the WiiConnect24 service stressing that Wii U is a brand new console and "not just an upgrade".

And now Nintendo UK wants to drive that message home by rolling out a new marketing campaign, MCV reports. This will include booking in-store space at Tesco and sending a five page leaflet to 300,000 of the supermarket's customers who bought a Wii but haven't picked up another console.

Pearce said: "There was a big misconception at launch about what Wii U is. And one of the big messages is that this is a new console and a new controller. There are many people out there that don't know what this is."

"We haven't had the sales we wanted on Wii U hardware. We haven't had the software for most of this year. But we have some quite ambitious numbers, particularly with some of our biggest franchises coming.

"Our monthly tracking shows that Wii remains the No.1 console for brand awareness. This offers us a massive opportunity to convert Wii owners to Wii U."

Nintendo's most recent quarterly financial report showed that worldwide Wii U sales came in at just 160,000 in the three months between April and July.

The Wii was a huge success because of what it was- a motion controlled console, which was new at its launch. Since then, Kinect and PS Move have come out, so Nintendo couldnt just make another Wii when they were designing a new console, so they decided to go for the design that the Wii U is now, which just didnt have a spot in the market.
Nothing Nintendo can do will change that, because the demand just isnt there for it.

I agree with this. Not that many people play it and with the new consoles coming out in a few months the remaining people that do play it are going to switch to a ps4 and or Xbox one

Osbourne I haven't heard of like anyone who liked the Wii U, feel sorry for Nintendo, they should have quit once they were on top.


True, nobody I know even has a Wii/Wii U.

u havent played it have u well you plug the console into the tv with hdmi and your gontroller is the game pad its not a handheld you retart its just an option if someone else wants to use the tv u can still play it with even better realistic graphics
