PlayStation 4 sales target is 5 million by March

Sony wants to sell 5 million PlayStation 4 units by March 2014, the company has announced at Tokyo Games Show.

Sony group CEO Andrew House made the announcement during Sony's keynote address, which also featured a presentation by Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida and engineering boss Masayasu Ito.

March 2014 marks the last month of Sony's 2013 financial year, Yoshida commented later on Twitter.

The keynote reiterated many previously announced aspects of Sony's PS4 strategy, including smartphone and tablet integration, the console's social networking and sharing capabilities, and Sony's dedication to indie games.

The PS Vita TV's features were revisited, with Ito demonstrating how the mini-console's Remote Play functionality will work in practice.

During his presentation, Ito also explained why PSN accounts will allow users to use their real name, pointing to casual gamers and their reluctance to befriend strangers on social networks.

"Hardcore users didn't mind using an anonymous name, but when casual users get a request from an anonymous name, do you think they'd accept it quickly? I think not," he said.

Sony announced last week that the PS4 will not release in Japan until February 22, three months after the console's launch in Europe, North America, Australia and several Asian regions.

PS4 will release November 29 in Europe and Australia, and November 15 in the US.

Tokyo Games Show runs from today, Thursday September 19, until Sunday September 22.

Took PS3 2 months to reach 1 million units sold. $500/month.

Now they want to sell 5 million in 4 months. $1.25m/month.

Most of the 360 players I know are switching to PS4 if they are getting a next-gen console. I would do the same. PS3 was released 7 years ago, and in that time, more gamers have came up. That, along with more people looking at the PS4 over the Xbox One, make the outcome hard to predict. They're trying to almost double the units sold rate that the PS3 had, but we're in a new generation of gamers and gaming. I personally think they'll be ALMOST there.

TheRealGoldIpad TBH; I rather buy a Sony product again. Microsoft is getting ridiculous with their Ban waves & Etc.

Then don't mod? It's pointless to mod the game and just get banned.

I agree with you. The people who complain about the disc less option of forfeiting your license if you buy a digital license the difference is this if you don't do anything wrong then you are not going to get banned simples but a lot of people I have noticed are just jumping on the bandwagon and complaining to Microsoft.

I'm most likely not getting a next gen console, but if somehow I have the extra money, a PS4 would be my choice

I wouldn't be surprised if they made 10 million by the end of next year. I think 5 million by March is very likely.
