GTA Online ambition 'to create an entire GTA world,' says North boss

The world of Grand Theft Auto Online is not locked in place, and has been designed to grow in size and ambition over time, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies has said.

Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, Benzies explained that Rockstar's dream is "to create an entire Grand Theft Auto world that consists of everything we've done or are going to do then let the player freely move between them."

The Rockstar boss called Grand Theft Auto Online "a beginning" for Rockstar, and claimed that the ideas for the online game had been percolating for over 11 years.

"Grand Theft Auto Online has been in our minds for a long time - since we started on Grand Theft Auto 3," he said.

"We've always wanted to create a world with the complexity of a single-player Grand Theft Auto game with the addition of real players. We wanted a world where people could spend years without getting bored of playing the same content over and over.

"I think we've managed to achieve something very close to our dream."

Rockstar unveiled GTA Online in August with confirmation that it will launch two weeks after the September 17 release of GTA V.

Speaking to CVG alongside the reveal, Benzies said Rockstar is planning to add new locations to GTA Online "all the time".

"We've set this up so there are no limitations. The only limitation is the size of the disc and how much memory we've got," he said. "We could, if we wanted, simulate the entire world, different countries, whatever. Whether we do that or not... But we've got a bunch of old stuff that we're toying with using."

In the same article Game Informer reveals new GTA Online details, including insight into how the character creation system works and how players will be able to manage their expanding collection of cars.

Rockstar has confirmed a US and European GTA 5 release date of September 17 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The game will launch in Japan on October 10.

-InsanelyAwesome- From what I have seen of and heard of about GTA Online, they have already perfected it. But if Rockstar still think they can make it much much better than I am not complaining.

Hell yeah, some of the vehicles they have put in will blow your mind lol

xDespise Oh man I don't even care if Multiplayer comes out Oct. 1st, SP is going to be so fun, it will definitely keep me busy until then. This will be the game of the century, maybe even decade. I seriously cannot wait. Rockstar, you've done it again. Never fail with good games. It's weird, every game that they've made was phenomenal and I would love to hear one that hasn't been. All the GTA's, RDR, Midnight Club, etc. Amazing game developers and I respect these guys more than any other company.

GTA IV actually turned out to be a horrible game. Bad Character control, stupid AI's, the friends blowing your phone up, limited custimization, bad swimming, bad car control, no planes, limited air vehicles, limit boats, bad missions, bad guns, bad GUI, ect ect. GTA IV was a fail game, no matter how you look at it. Unless you want to say 'They failed perfectly.' Haha. SA Was a great game. Then IV just blew that out of the water with how horrible it was.

Honestly, I liked GTA IV, not as much as the older GTA games though!

GTA IV was made in like 08. What do you expect?

Famous_Energy have they released the gta v map yet?

I think they released the sizes of the maps and how huge the difference was.

Thought it was leaked? Or did Rockstar actually release it?

It was in the Strategy Guide

What do they mean by grow? Does the city itself become more productive? More people, places, what? I understand they can take/ put in missions as they please but I don't understand this, "has been designed to grow in size and ambition over time." Someone clarify please?
