Xbox One DRM: Microsoft’s Penello doesn’t see it returning

4.6
Xbox One’s DRM issue seems to be a thing of the past, and Microsoft’s Albert Penello has taken to the NeoGAF forums to discuss the console in detail. When quizzed about a potential return of always-online DRM, he said he couldn’t see it happening.

In the thread, Penello was asked if Xbox One DRM policies could be re-instated, to which he replied, “I don’t see that ever happening with content you’re buying today either on disc and digitally. All of that DRM stuff was in place because there was no physical security on the disc itself, so all the licensing was done digitally.

“When you build that type of model, then you need to make sure people can’t install games on a bunch of machines, then unplug them. That would have made us an awesome Pirating machine, and that can’t happen for obvious reasons. When we went back to disc security, those DRM policies weren’t necessary. So no reason to turn it on later.”

He added, “If there’s ambiguity, it’s because it’s possible that, in the future, IF WE ADDED BACK some of those family sharing ideas we had in the beginning, we’d have [to] reintroduce similar types of policies. So IF you wanted to have a game and have that family sharing, always-in-the-cloud, and digital loaning – then we might add those requirements back.

“You can imagine a world where we have both types of models at the same time. Again, big IF, but the bottom line is I wouldn’t worry about us making those policies ‘retroactive’ which seems to be the issue I hear people worry about.”

I don't see it returning either. They already made the decision to take it away and for them to bring it back would make them weak as a company.

They may bring back some of the things that were going to be enforced with the DRM but not everything.

Lettuce keep it 100.

I'm buying a PS4 but I have nothing against the X1 and will be getting it win Titanfall releases. It irks me when PS4 fanboys say they're not buying a X1 because; "Who's to say Microsoft doesn't reverse the policies months later?"

He shouldn't have added that last part though. Because Sony fanboys will misquote it and say "AMG DRM IS RETURNING TO XBOX ONE!!!"

Personally, I didn't like the DRM, it was just horrible in my opinion.

New is bad.
Just like obama.
DMR has a few cool things but the rest was trash

Everything in that statement is True.

Screw Change.

Same, people really should be informed better about the system design model, i mean it got shot down purely because the 24 hour required sign in, funny thing is you currently get checked on the 360 anyway.

The problem was that not enough people understood the true workings of their DRM policy, and so, it got revoked. Such a shame that so many had to jump on the band waggon and basically set back the inevitable future of gaming.

That's the society we live in unfortunately, even consumers don't know what they want.

They should have both. If you buy a game digitally you should be allowed to share it with up to 5-10 people in your 'family'. If you own a physical copy then you obviously wouldn't be allowed to do that, but you would be able to resell your game. That scenario would be win win. It would make sense to do 'sharing' with games that are more single player oriented. Obviously when a multiplayer game comes out, everyone wants to play it so everyone would get a copy regardless. However a physical copy makes more sense that way so you can resell your copy, if that's what you do.

The huge flaw with microsoft's original drm policy is that they aren't like steam, they can't offer huge discounts on games because they have a physical presence in stores.

I liked some of the features that came with the DRM, but the DRM wasn't customer friendly at all. I also personally hated the part where you needed an internet connection everyday as well. I hope it doesn't come back. If it does, I hope we can have both. Not exactly sure how they would do that, unless they decide to either bring out different disks for the DRM Xbox or don't have a disc tray and make you download them digitally.

What gamer in the right state of mind would want that.
