PS3 to PS4 game upgrade fee 'decided by publishers'

4.5
The decision on how much consumers should pay to upgrade their PS3 games to PS4 versions will be made by publishers, according to Sony.

The platform holder announced an upgrade offer during its Gamescom press conference earlier this week, when it said PS4 versions of participating titles will be offered to consumers at significant discounts if they already own a PS3 copy.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara explained that Sony would not be setting an upgrade price, and that the decision to implement one would rest entirely with the publisher.

"The publisher gets to define that, actually," Gara said. "What will happen is, the PS4 digital file will be made available on the PlayStation Store (as it would be anyway) at launch, and the PS3 discs will be sold through retail.

"What the consumer can then do, for a premium to be defined by the publisher, is access the PS4 digital game and then, provided they still have the PS3 disc, they will be able to play the PS4 version when they decide to buy the next gen.

"Time window and price window has yet to be defined. Time window is probably more business policy for PlayStation, perhaps, but the premium will be defined by the publisher."

Activision has already announced that players will be able to upgrade PS3 and Xbox 360 copies of Call Of Duty: Ghosts to next-gen ones for a suggested retail price of £10/€10/$10.

This is good, so you don't have to buy the exact same game.

I am glad they have decided to do this.

M249 This is a pretty decent deal considering it's a whole new console you're moving the game to.

Agreed, better that paying 40 pound on a new game :)

lugiaisbeast101 Theirs a lot of greedy publishers out their......Hopefully no fee exists, I'm not getting a PS4 but that would not be fun to pay fees for your favorite game to be transferred. Theirs many people such as myself who doesn't have ANY credits (money) in the playstation store. Anyways, this is good news though.

Having to read that killed me.. please learn how to use their, there and they're..

Also, if you think about it.. Who's greed? The community or the publishers? I think the community just expects everything to be given everything for free..

Yeah. Shame that there are people out there who actually think a multi-million dollar company who sells the same game every year with over priced season passes might actually give something nice to the buyer for free at least once. Shame, shame, shame.

Potentially they could allow the upgrade to be free then, without losing money.
